This weekend Dangerous and I danced the Engine Hokey-Cokey. All together now : "You put the motor, you pull the motor out. In-out, in-out, pull some more bits off the make the b@sta@rd fit". Repeat ad infinitum. Setting up the home made lifting beam. The Goddess is about 400 metres from where I'm currently storing the DAF bits. So a very slow journey round the estate while wincing at every bump and drain cover. Engine and box is 600 kilos which causes 500 kilo cranes to either spew their guts or collapse as below. That's a broken sump for him. The 'hole' Getting the engine the right way round (very important) Already taking bits off The approach Hoik it back out again as the remote gear selector housing was fouling the studs of the old crossmember platform. Pleasingly we didn't lose the spring in the gearbox. Back in a bit further but now the turbo outlet is fouling the floor. The other side is OK (so far) Its a bit difficult to see but we've go to get it high enough to clear the clutch bellhousing and already the compressor inlet pipe is fouling the floor. Nope, the turbo outlet will definitely not go. The axle/bellhousing problem Topside it's not too bad but the exhaust fanimold and turbo will be nearly directly under my feet. Mucho heat shield needed methinks. Spinning the turbo outlet It's a Holst baby. Liquid engineering Got the turbo turned and then we had to go home. Re-sheeting the Goddess and putting everything away takes so much time that we wistfully think of the time it was all in one place. As everything was so stable we returned longitudinally More exciting forktruckery next week when we hope to start cutting the tinwork.

Pride cometh before a fall! The forks are too bl00dy short so we footled about taking stuff off the engine so it would fit better Compressor intake and header tank feed and return Started on a blanking plate for the hole left by the removal of the power steering pump Worked out that with a couple of chassis plates we can 'probably' use the original gearbox mounts Then mulling over the engine lifting problem Dangerous remembers that his nephew may have a big old engine crane for not many pounds. 2 Days later we have the Little Green Giant. Fits pretty well. It's an old-skool Epco 1 ton garage crane This hopefully won't fold up like all those 1/2 tonne cranes used for lifting a Cummins.

atleast the rear castors work on the clarke crane adjustable height on the main stem is a great idea, probably doubles the possible height on the ram/boom

This week was Groundhog Day but with the new crane. Darrenh all the castors work, it's just the sh1t tarmac we're working on. It's not level and the surface layer just crumbles when the crane goes over it. We decided that unlocking one unit with the engine in it and then unlocking another unit with the forktruck in it, getting the forktruck out, locking that unit up, driving round the estate to extract the engine from the first unit, then locking that unit and then forktrucking the engine to where the Goddess is stored was a bit of a waste of time. So now we're keeping the engine tarped down on a pallet in front of the Goddess. Should save an hour each time. Cutting out the floor and bulkhead to Jayson's pattern Wiggling it in. Due to the unevenness and varying levels of the tarmac we have to 'bar' the crane in and out. More cutting needed Some of the inner box sections are as uncorroded as the day they were welded in. I took the chance to remove some of the redundant kit from the the engine bay. This is the temperature sensor that told the Sigmund pump operator how hot the engine was running from the back of the Goddess at the pump controls. In a bit further But need another 6 inches so the shifter lines up with the hole in the cab. We're going to need to buy a load leveller but we don't have enough height. Still not a lot of clearance on the front diff. Back out again and time for more cutting. Redundant gearbox mounts. Jayson used these so we'll keep them for now. More cutting Pedals Even more cutting And we're there Perfecto mondo And time ran out. We need to address the fact the lifting beam is not optimal. We need to lift the gearbox over the front diff and then level out again. Also the engine/box lies at an angle so we need to sort that also however the crane has been a godsend. With the forktruck we really needed three people as the driver has a lousy view through the mast but Dangerous and I can do the whole thing with the crane. We cleared up and tarped everything down on the pallet. Then we went out for a celebratory one. Next time we start on the gearbox and engine mounts.

Looking good. Hope it doesn't take too long to fill in all those holes you've made.

Looking good. Hope it doesn't take too long to fill in all those holes you've made. Still a long way to go and there's the inevitable NVH of sitting in a tin and wooden box on top of a large diesel plus the fact if I can't get some heat shielding over the exhaust fanimold and turbo then I shall have to wear asbestos boots

This bad(dish) boy was waiting for me when I got home. Going to get the Cummins and ZF in square and level tomorrow for measuring up for engine mountings.

Be careful about those engine tilters. A vendor in Norway (Biltema.no) has suspended sales of a version looking very similar to that one. I bought a third similar version from another vendor and it worked, but I had to use a socket and ratchet on the nut opposite the handle to turn the damn worm gear to tilt the engine. The eyelet that attaches to the crane had a habit of suddenly repositioning itself in the hook as the angle was adjusted (not smoothly but notchy). I'd Imagine the engine you're using it on is even heavier than my Daimler v8. I'd suggest you grease the worm gear for smoother operation.

Got started on setting up the leveller with the lifting brackets on the head bolts and found that, although it gave us control and alignment not available with the beam, it was way too tall So we needed some more shackles. That involved a demon run through holiday traffic to Machine Mart. Strangely enough their shackles are 'Suitable for towing and lifting' but simultaneously not to be used for lifting under any circumstances so obviously not tested. Seem to be better quality than the ones supplied with the leveller New shackles and old shackles and some we had lying around A slight application of the traveller toolkit and we were here but still too tall. So a quick disassembly, turn the side brackets 180 degrees, open up the top holes to 15mm and use the top shackle pin direct to the leveller. Not elegant and potentially a bit dodgy so along with Sonus' warning we were very, very careful. Perhaps it should be 'Dirty Amateur Tools' Just enough clearance Goes in and out like a greased ferret (or mammal of your choice) So easily it went in a bit too far Now we have an engine/gearbox installation system we need to think about the engine and gearbox mountings. The gearbox ones will be simple chassis plates that connect to the the DAF mounts but the engine mounts are going to be 3D barstewards. The DAF mounts are cranked forward of the block but I want to use the old crossmember mountings. I can't move those as they are also the front spring hangers. Having made our plans for the next two weeks we did some trial sizing. The radiator fits So does the intercooler I like it when a plan comes to fruition.
