Hi, fixing the hydraulics or fitting an air system takes care of the operation of the brakes. But if the brakes are borderline when all up together then that is another matter. Fitting bigger brakes may not be practical. The suggestion of a Telmar retarder is a good one but may require a bigger battery and alternator set-up. Ferodo used to do a hydraulic retarder, which was a multi plate clutch affair in an oil bath usually mounted on the back of the gearbox or the nose of the diff, but I think they can also be remotely mounted, but they will require an oil cooler. An exhaust brake on a diesel and both types of retarder will take the load off the brakes and will increase there service life.
There is no such thing as a free lunch!!
Good luck with it all and keep up the good work.
Colin

Cummins and an exhaust brake as sciclone suggested. it may be slightly out of character with the Bedford, but the turbo whistle is addictive!
One of my mates at work has a sister who used to work at Cummins and I got him to ask her if she could get a discount on a 6BT, but the answer was no.....

those telmar retarders where considered to be pretty naff in period, they fitted them to a lot of the Bedford VALs as they suffered from massive brake fade from their tiny front brakes.
the Bedford VAMs used a hydraulic twin cylinder with a built in servo and the brake on mine where ace

Thanks for all the advice guys! Good week, bad week Bad; the brake fluid leak Good; back in the field (but the sheep are eating the wiring : Bad; we're losing our free accommodation in 6-8 weeks Good; Tom at Truckbizz in Winchester has a Cummins 6BT cut-out plus 5 speed box with my name on it . It will be either a 130 or 150 bhp but it seems the horsepower can be reduced by adjusting the pump. The 5-speed will be 1:1 in 5th so I'll need to find some bus diffs to offset the lower revs of the diesel AND we know that an Iveco 17E45 6 pot diesel with box will fit Bad; Cummins is 24 volt, more electrical complications Good; the leaks in the roof were really minimal considering the amount of rain we had at the weekend. They were never watertight even from new. Have looked at exhaust brakes and retarders. And I've been out in the Healey a lot to get my classic mojo back and all is (currently) right with the world.

You can get red PU sealant for the roof leaks if needed.

Forgive my ignorance, but why would the cummins need 24v? If it is a basic engine, with very little electrics, would it be possible to swap the alternator for 12v, then run a serial circuit for starter only (assuming it's only the starter that needs 24v)?

Or get the starter motor rewound for 12v.

That is one good looking truck!
The Cummins probably need to be 24V for cranking power whilst keeping the wiring and battery a reasonable size. You can by 24-12V regulators if this helps.

As jonw says it's down to cranking power so it's either 2 x 12volt batteries in series and take 12 volts off one or a 24 volt battery and a 24-12v regulator at 25 amps which should be enough to run the lighting and wipers. As I'm already running 2 x 12 volt batteries, one for the vehicle and one for the winch and hydraulics, then it would be sensible to try that first. Good news in this morning is that after filling in the DVLA's converted vehicle check list (it's not a trike, why am I asked questions about feekin trikes???) my V5 has returned with it as a historic red Bedford flat bed and still no need for an MOT .YAY!

would a 12volt PMGR spin a cummins ? Too weedy I'd have thought. The big one on the Healey struggles with 6.3 litres at 11:1 so 5.9 litres at a minimum compression of 18:1 would be difficult but no doubt someone will be along to put me straight.

Yeah its a big ask. My old landy I swapped from medieval Lucas starter to very late model Bosch pmgr (by virtue of failure not chasing upgrade) it span up like a blender afterwards, sounded hilarious!
