I'm facing a dilemma.....I got a mint std mk1 golf gti, i love it to bits, but, I gotta go back to uni in september, where its gonna be sat about outside, and not driven from one week to the next, probably vandalised cos its in a student car park, so, I'm thinking of selling her for something else...
I want something old skool, maybe rear wheel drive, definately fun, don't wanna spend too much, don't want it to rust away either, and its gotta do the 202mile hack from Reading to Huddersfield easily!
Been thinking th mk2 gti route, or a scirocco, or corrado, or 318 e30, and u lot have got me stupidly keen on old vauxhalls/ volvo 340's/360's, so they're on the list too..... Any other suggestions?

Seems a shame to sell ya pride and joy, but they do fetch good money. you suggestions sound ok, and i can vouch that my 360 volvo was reliable...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Not keen on the Skoda route, my dad had a viva, which was the worst car he ever owned )!
Quite like old Manta's also.
It would be a shame to sell it, seeing as i've only had it since october, but, if some drunk punk ass mo fo smeared a kebab on it or keyed it like they did on my old 306, i would have to really seriuosly get kung fu on their ass!

I had a Volvo 360. It was thirstier than an alcoholic working in a salt mine. I had a Manta too, I enjoyed that car.

Capri. You'll be da boi with a Capri. Edit: the seats are like armchairs and you sit practically in the back. You can't get more laid back

Possibly a bit main stream, and obviously front wheel drive, but in my opinion you can't beat a Mk2 Golf. Failing that, a nice E30 as you suggest, my mate has one (325i sport) and it's one of the few cars I'd consider swapping my Golf for.
Shame to sell the Mk1 but I know exactly how you feel, would be a shame if it got wrecked. Do you know anyone who could store it for you perhaps to save getting shut of it?

we need more criteria really, my 360 also was thirsty and not much fun, i let it rot and bought an xr2 for this reason! Capri and manta, great suggestion if you can get one in your budget Cavalier, Cortina, Sierra (too new? see FS section), J, the list is long but a bigger RWD will typically cost more to run than a small hatch, specially if booted but cruise nicely on the motorway. Chevette is a happy medium...

why not keep the golf, but leave it somewhere safe - like at your parents if thats a possibility?
then pick up something like a polo for £100-200 and use that while at uni.
