In N.I. you are with the tester for the first half of the test until it goes up on the lift. Every opportunity the car is turned off. I've NO sympathy for someone who took off a radiator cap on a hot engine - on any running engine or warm engine even. Anyone capable of such silliness shouldn't be near the car to begin with. In other news I've had cars both burst a radiator pipe on a tester, and squirt diesel in another ones face. Both instant fails, of course

As everyone's stated - messing with a rad cap, without protection, on an overheating car is asking for trouble
I've obviously had some very nice MOT testers by the sounds of it - I'm in the car during the test, keeping an eye on stuff (like having to turn fan on manually), working the pedals, steering etc and turning the engine off as soon as possible 'can I turn it off now' 'just need to test the servo, have you got ABS or PAS?' 'no, none of those' 'you can turn it off then'

A few years back i had a orion 1600i ghia, the tester was checking the middle lap belt, when it flew apart, hit him in the eye and gave him a black eye.Needless to say it failed!!!!!!

we have the same problem with the DS... the mot testers know nothing... so I make a point of switching the electric rad fan on before the test so if it gets left to idle for the whole test (it does) then it stays nice n cool.... Its easily do able ... just bridge the connectors if it only works when the ignitions on... or wire it off an ignition live.... don't trust the testers to : A - be nice and turn it off . and B - remember to even if you ask them. Not so easy with a viscous fan though! Even when new they weren't great for overheating by all accounts and unleaded has made it worse. Have just ordered an electric fan and controller to install infront of the rad for future. Good news is they kept it rest of day and it passed with no re-test fee, think they realised they'd been a little silly. So burble burble it now goes. On the plus side the rebuilt mechanical fuel pump works great (when not sucking vapour) and it springs into life great.

Last MOT I went in for they asked if I wanted to hang around and watch. (I would have, but I had to get to work.) I'd have thought most decent/small garages wouldn't have any issues with you waiting and watching it get done. I may be wrong so please don't shoot me if I am Every MOT I have ever taken for I have watched them, I thought that by LAW (mot law) they had to have a MOT viewing area so you could watch them MOT, normally through a windo in a waiting room, sometimes ona chair by the pit.. last one I took one, had a proper church pew behind a railing, 2 signs above - 1 was MOT viewing area and other was Take a pew while u wait.. Most no longer advertise their viewing space, but I'm pretty sure you have a right to veiw the test, but due to H&S its now behind a screen or some barrier advantages of this are, most will ask you stuff when doing the test and sometimes that bulb that works if tapped etc, can be sorted... Yep, every MOT station has to have a viewing area. It's always that blue/red on white sign to indicate where it is too. Like a couple of the others, I'm usually in the car doing things like the lights or having a natter with my mate while he pokes around under the car anyway.

My MOT man is great as I can wander around poking bits underneath while he is doing other stuff and keeping him chatting when he looks towards the iffy bits My cars have always been turned off after the brakes and lights have been done unless a suspect exhaust is noticed or something. I would not expect a car to tick over indoors for 45mins on hot day without a good risk of boiling, old uns especially. As for removing a hot rad cap!!! If you release the pressure then the water in the system can instantly boil as the boiling point of water is higher when under pressure, the main reason for pressurised systems.

my MOT guy is great for being able to get under the car and take a good look around myself its the only chance i get to see it up on a 4 poster and there is stuff you just don't see when its just up on a jack . plus most of the time I'm the one operating the lights ect or moving the steering while its up in the air
