if it was me, shop around for the changeover year e36. because people expect e46 they are very very cheap. my last was a 99T 318IS, orient blue. e46 M3 alloys from new. one doctor owner 130k. full bmw service history. straght from bmw finance p/x. Price was a bargain £300 with 9 months mot. was a curse word to sell but in end got 1100. but when you were looking at 3,500 for a e46 in same year a bit of a bargain.
Anyway the 4cly 1.9 is lump was so much better in every respect than the 325 i had prior. handling was superb, and could really only notice the lower performance when it came to filling up at the pumps. the 6 is a very relaxed cruiser on the Motorway, and the engine note is to die for by the time you remove a box or two.
Points to look out for are rear suspension bushes, and the rear springs will almost certainly have lost their pigtails. rear wings and leading into the rear bumper mount. and the sills if has mtech kit fitted.
As you are looking at the six get it really hot and make sure it don't overheat. hopefully being on an S plate wont have the nickasil engine. compression tester usefull to take with you. make sure oil is at max and boot it and back off any oil smoke run away the 2.8 can't be rebored. some sellers have been known to run at the miniumum to reduce smoke or use aditives. Also ideally you want to hunt out a 323 or a 530 manifold(not the V8) as the 2.8 is deliberately restricted. still want to see a bmw6 on bike carbs!
other thing is expect heavy brake wear and ocasional dodgy electrics. fan motors, the fuel computer, and the climate all can have a mind of their own. window droppers also can play up.
LSD also can play silly beggars, but normally the ASR will jam on which for most retro riders shouldnt be a negative point

Good lord, that's some dish you've got there! Are they E34 M5 rims? Close dude, there E36 M3 Replicas. 17x10 rear 17x8.5 on the back. The 318iS' are cracking little engines although I still don't feel they have a scratch on the 6cyl engines (bar the 320 which IMO is a waste of space lol. Power figures of the 318iS with the gas guzzling of the 325 lol)

I love my e36, has been one of the best cars I've ever owned its a 2.8 coupé, one of the later ones on a T-plate, Fuel economy isn't too bad if driven sensibly (tend to get about 32/33mpg on a mix of motorways and round town driving) Mine is for sale if your interested As mentioned before, watch out for rust on the rear arches & little electrical problems, mainly make sure that both front windows go up & down, as people have nasty habits of closing the doors by the glass, which (over time) can bend the mechanism slightly, meaning the window thinks its jammed & doesn't work Apart from that, ive not had any problems in the 18-ish months ive owned it, and wouldn't be selling it if I didn't have to

Just noticed on Parkers that the 328i is listed as having 193bhp, while the 325i has 192bhp - anyone know any more info on this...?

The 328 has a very restrictive manifold and it's not a straight swap putting an M50 one onto the M52 engine. I'd choose a 325 every time (non-Vanos one with a flat front on the engine, if it looks like there's half a tennis ball on it it's got Vanos) and weld in some plates for the diff mountings (on early cars the diff could, if driven very hard, rip its mountings out. BMW sell reinforcement plates you can retrofit for less than £50 I think). 325s are more reliable when worked hard and a lot of people I know prefer the power delivery.

Going to look at this on Saturday (assuming someone else doesn't buy it before then!) - quite excited. Reasons why I didn't buy this... - when we arrived, it was parked at the very back of a narrow lot behind about ten other cars, making it near-impossible to get it out for a test drive... despite having called him five hours before to say we were coming to view - bodywork, while generally straight, needed a few bits replacing, including the smashed up driver door mirror and driver's side skirt (which look fine in the pictures!) - all four wheels (which look great in the photos) were seriously knackered and need refurbing - general signs that it hadn't been looked after: cheapo ditchfinder tyres, dodgy aftermarket gearknob with a dragon on it (?!), very cheap aftermarket tape deck, calipers badly painted red by some ham-fisted berk, dodgy boy racer effort to spray the cam cover and various underbonnet bits in M-Tech colours - entirely disinterested salesman ('It's an old car, of course it's not perfect') - strong money for a not-great example, basically ...so the search goes on. Also kind of interested in an Audi A3 1.8 T now (although I won't bang on about them, they can't even pretend to be retro).

The 328i uses an M52 motor. It is all fine if looked after but if it develops overheating problems through neglet than that engine could easily become scrap. There are problems apparantly doing headgaskets on the M52.
However with M50 inlet manifold, M50 TB and US spec M3 cam 240 hp is achievable. I think the E36 at long last is becomeing respectable. I think its a good choice.

...it goes onward to Hertfordshire, in fact, tomorrow evening - going to look at this one: Looks like a cracker (although that's what I thought about the last one) - fingers crossed.

Good stuff Dan.
Looks like a nice one. Sorry to hear about the blue one - traders selling something that is clearly not correct is one of the major things that puts me off dealing with the trade (a few dicks spoiling the thing!) Time wasted and high hopes shattered!
It looks like the research and hard work has paid off though. The green is really nice and I can't remember seeing one in that colour (sport that is). Are the wheels genuine AC ones? Very nice if so.
Looking forward to seeing the pics of it in your ownership. LOTS of pics ;D Best of luck on Saturday - you'll be going to bed very excited on Friday night now.

I'm very excited already! They are indeed genuine AC Schnitzer wheels - all a bit kerbed so could do with a refurb, but that can go on the back burner for the mo. Needs new tyres on the rear too, so I haggled him down a bit - it's on 255s currently which rub a little on corners, so I reckon I'll go for 225s instead. They'll have a nice bit of stretch then!
So yes, very pleased. And the wife's rather keen too, so smiles all round. ;D

Glad you found one! Boston Greens a great colour on these! Nice one dude, it looks awesome on the ACS Alloys. Does it have leathers? Also looks like it's got a lip spoiler on the back? If not I reckon it'd suit it Welldone anyway dude, hope it's a gooden!

Full leather, yes, but sadly no spoiler on the boot. Something I'll be looking into in due course...

Please don't go for anything bigger than the lip spoiler! Anything bigger and it ruins the lines of the car imo. Looks a lovely example, I'm quite jealous! I bought an E36 318is in March, and I've loved it thus far. It's a bit rough, has rubbish ACS replicas, and an indigo blue velour interior (which I love) but despite all that it's ace! Have a pic or 2 of mine:
