Ramps whenever possible ![](http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i251/bruceholder/MudMonkey/MudMonkey041.jpg) Axle stands are awesome, but buy the biggest/most heavy duty you can (they aren't that expensive and give you more height) - mine are 6 ton ones, cost only £30 a pair and will way outlast cheapy 2ton halfords ones that wobble like mad! Axle stands & ramps combo ![](http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i251/bruceholder/MudMonkeyII/MM006.jpg) If you can get two sets of ramps, things are about as safe as you can get for working under a car ![](http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i251/bruceholder/MudMonkeyII/Alt01.jpg) Bruce do you use the same ramps when working on the mystery machine (actually you could prob walk underneath it)? I have got a shogun with some chunky tyres on and always think that the ramps look too narrow and wouldnt be fully supported?

I use ramps and wooden blocks at home, but if I need to take a wheel off on the roadside etc, I stack the removed wheel and the spare and push them under the sill just in case. Best to put a board or something on top though, on the one occassion it did roll off the jack, I put a hole in the side wall of a nearly new 175/70x13 Michelin.

As for lifting a car, get 2 pairs of drive-on ramps. Drive up one pair, then jack up the back end and slide the second pair under the rear wheels. Assuming the ramps are reasonable quality and on solid, level ground its about the safest way to work under a car. +1. That's exactly what I do.

nowt wronge with axle stands IF they are decent ones, had my project on a set for the psat 2 years, compleatly striped and rebult the underside and axles on em no problem, i'll grab a pic of decent and curse word axle stands later today to show what i mean. When i use ramps i allways have 1 facing one way and the other facing tother way, in case the hand brake cable snaps, then it cant roll off ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Generally I can do most stuff on the Mystery Machine without ramps (when sat normally on its wheels it's almost as tall as a standard Delica on a set of ramps!)
I have used ramps on it a few times though and nothing to worry about. Sure, the tyres are wider than the main 'tread' of the ramp, but it still sits vert steady & stable.

The mishap with the ramp reminded me of a place I worked in the 70's. In the lube bay was an ancient four poster that had a rotary switch, not a push button. You could finish the oil change etc, send the ramp down and turn away to wash your hands or whatever. Trouble is, this ramp rattled and shook like a thing possessed, so much so that the gravity locks at the front end could kick in. I saw more than one car bounce across the forecourt after being spat out by that behemoth! We didn't have Health and Safety in those days.

Here you are, on the right, "better than just a jack" type stands and on the left "propper working under a project" stand ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v151/bortaf/ebay020.jpg)

I use axle stands and jacks together just in case. I have often thought about searching for the dealer forecourt display stands , the massive tilt ramps things would make great ramps for getting under your car to weld it up. Good point. There's someone selling one of those ex-display ramps in Classic Car Weekly for £300. Where do you put it when not using it though? yeah good point they are rather large! hmm you could park a spare car on them when not in use like on the fore court ;D does any one know who makes them? I saw some that appear to be modular and come apart into seperate bits .....might have to have a closer look. suppose i could just ask the people who work there ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Doing a bit of a bump here as I'm looking for some recomendations. I'm after a set of long term project axle stands. My Amazon has decided to bit me in the ![](http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/underwire/2009/11/fox_60.jpg) with some more shocking repairs... 1mm steel is not suitable for chassis rail repairs ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) I'm looking for a nice sturdy set as I'm going to be spending quite alot of time underneath it scraping off underseal as well as doing reapirs to the underside so i could do with getting some tall ones. There is going to be no front suspension or wheels on the car when i do this so i unfortunatly cant have that security but i will be placing spare wheels under the car next to the stands. Thanks in advance. Jackman

I can't moan too much cos I have access to this (@ my Dad's) and he has built sloping wooden ramps either side of it to get low ones on (the ramps need about 10cms clearance) ;D ![](http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/AndyAndKara/Cars/DSC01323.jpg) Is that a bike lift? Are those extra supports he's put on the sides?

If its long term you could dig a big hole under the car and stand in it I wish that was possible ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) Id love a pit to work on the underside of cars. Found these which are a bit overkill but i know will be able to hold the load for long periods and will most prob not require to be at full lift 6 Ton StandsNow i need a jack lol.

If you do use stands, be careful with what you put your stands underneath. It's no good having a nice solid stand underneath a paper thin sill. As I jacked up my Beta, there was a big cracking noise and a crack appeared running from the edge of the edge of the wheelarch fo a couple of inches along the top of the sill... I gave up on the stands idea fo that car there and then! It'll onlyget put on stands after the sills have been sorted... ![](http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5128/5324425021_86ed461a57.jpg)

I've got my self some very heavy duty truck jack-stands/axle-stands that are older then me. I have no problems getting under the car with these not only because you can get them high up but they are solid as a rock. (seen here in '07 under my 1602) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/427/25900ad3.jpg) I also have a set of 'cheap' new ones and it wont get right under the car with them! I bet if you looked at them only enough they would bend. I've been using them under cars at the mo because all 4 of the truck ones are under my project car. I always keep the jack pumped up just under the crossmember just in case the stands let go. To get my cars up onto my ramps you need some extra length in the run up. The body work just pushes them along, nothing some wooden blocks wont fix. Cheers

I'd concur with those people who have suggested more than one method of support. I tend to leave the jack in place, even once the axle stands are under, just in case. ![](http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/hs049.snc6/167966_10150089422999521_806109520_5800848_6399330_n.jpg)
