Revived classics are a bit like Elvis - all youthful, stylish, lithe and causing a ruckus on the rock n' roll scene that had teenage girls screaming and hyperventilating in his early years. Fast-forward to a fat, sweating, lumbering self-parody in his later days, eventually dying whist taking a dump. Tragic. Retros should be more like James Dean. Went out on high, remained forever young and cool. My sentiments exactly,word for word. |

What's the name of the first Ferrari 'bizzler?  I think they should bring back a fatter, ugly version of the Beetle , Scirocco .....Come to think of it, they should just leave them, it'll not be about the heritage, it'll be about the profits, obviously that's what it was about in the beginning, but it's just not the same. Hopefully that makes sense... The New Scirocco GT TFSI is by far and away a superior car to both the Mk2 Scirocco and the Corrado.... (never driven a Mk1 Scirocco so can't comment...) It's also (IMO) much better looking... but to each his own and all that.... |

Aye but the Escorts and other RWD stuff mentioned here (like the AE86) would be brought back, but with fail wheel drive. And that would ruin them.
(Think the Capri, but mounted on the fwd Focus chassis like they planned)

I kind of like the new Scirocco's (as much as I struggle to be inspired by moderns), and I am sure they are very good.... However the thing that bugs me about them is that they are not a coupe!
I suppose they are classed (and marketed) as coupes, but to me they are just like a fatter Golf hatch and are absolutely not that coupe shape that made the Scirocco and to a certain extent the Corrado classic. They have the front right but somehow the rear end just doesn't work for me. It would have been nice if it was a bit longer with a fastback style and a sharply cut off kamm tail style rear, rather than just being a hatch - Which lets face it, is what it is.
(IMO, and sorry to hijack for a 'rocco-rant!)

Mk1 Scirocco is a nice looking car, don't get me wrong! (so are the Mk2 and the Corrado as well... but the new 'Rocco has something about it... I only drove the 2.0TFSI Petrol, which is a cracking engine... I bet the 140 and 170PS diesels are a much better propostion than the 1.6 Carb'd petrol they chucked in the Mk2 Rocco, and it'd knock an 8v or even a 16v Corrado into a cocked hat too... all with reasonable fuel economy too... I had a 170PS TDI Golf before I bought the GTI and that properly shifted... absolute shovelfuls of torque! |
