I'd say its liek any car of similar age get a decent one, regular service and sort issues when they first appear and you should have no issues at all
after all the 2.0l one is the VW audi engine (i believe) so parts a plenty..
as to bodywork etc, I'm not sure, i owned /had use of one for about 2 weeks many years ago and it was great.. didnt want to get attatched as i knew i couldnt keep it..
As to insurance, try specialist places, someone like Footman James shoudl be able to help, my modern daily and retro's are with them, then i added business use to all and it went up a whopping £80 for the year..

I've been trying to convince my wife that we should get one, but she's insisting on something with aircon. I don't suppose there's any chance that was an option on the 924...?!

Good cars and very reliable if looked after. Find yourself a good one - spend a bit of money and you will have no issues. Check for rot on the sills - both outer and inner. Any sign of accident damage and walk away. Parts are plentiful and cheap - both 924s and 944s were made in massive numbers. 924s are not favored by the Porsche pedophiles so parts are cheap. Many parts are shared with VW - so with a bit of help you can source cheap mechanical bits. Interiors and cosmetics are what cost money - so make sure these are in good shape prior to buying. Edited to add: This is a 944 turbo or 951 (internal number) rather than a 924.

ive had a 924 was great car never let me down and 2 mates snice had my old one and still going strong i think ya can get air con on some to and I'm sure that orange one is a 924 with that rare body kit they did for them / rare model ? not a 944 ya can see the back arches are bolt on not blended in like a 944 my sad moment over lol id have a 924 or 944 again anyday

Later 924s certainly had aircon, not sure about the earlier ones.
I looked at them a few years ago and you have to check very carefully what you are buying. Yes many of the parts are sourced/derived from stuff in the VAG parts bin, but not all. I was told by an independent parts supplyer that depending on engine codes, water pumps for example can either be a standard Audi item at £20-30 or a Porsche specific one at nearly 10x that. Only other thing that I remember specificanlly was that the interior trim was a bit ropey oon early cars, but that's a cosmetic issue.
Get a good one that's been properly serviced and it'll be a nice daily.

This is a 944 turbo or 951 (internal number) rather than a 924. Looks like a 924 Turbo to me ? (arches bolted on)

It's either a GTR or a replica of one. The rally GTRs had simple arch extensions and that air intake but the Le Mans and IMSA cars had the box arches but the intake placed differently. Normal 924 Turbo had a NACA duct in the bonnet and standard arches, 924 Carrera had the intake and tacked on arches more like a 944 and race GTRs both 924 & 944 had the box arches. Turbo Carrera GTR rally GTR race Looks like a lot of fun whatever it is.

I think if you get a good one it'll be as reliable as any modern car. There's a lot of polished up but probably not that great sub $1000 ones on the go out there, which would be fine as a weekend smoker. If I was looking for a daily one I'd be wanting to spend a couple of grand and get a lowish mileage goodun with some service history.

Watch out for low flying Mercedes Benz though.....My brief experience I noticed a few things;
Handle fairy well though getting the wheel alignment done can be tricky as they have an unusual set-up Peppy enough without really being fast Almost absurdly simple mechanicals
Door mirror positioning is really strange Noisey pedal has the usual german long stroke and floor-mounted making heel 'n' toe downshifts nigh on impossible. Rear seats are 100% useless as seats and they have a very high boot floor.
They have a huge panel gap at the base of the windscreen. Water collects in the battery tray and on the near-side it can get into the fuse box. Get a late one as they're fully galavanized.
Oh and I got insured on a classic policy for about £400.

Do it had a 2.0 924 up until a couple of months back. As said before simple mechanics, surprisingly good on fuel. Not the fastest thing on the road but its good fun to drive. Mine was insured on a classic policy for £160 a year, I was 25 at the time. Has the added bonus of being able to tell everyone you drive a porsche!! Heres a pic of my old one had lovely electric seats

i had one as my daily and it was great 2ltr was easy to work on and cheap parts from gsf and the like. kinda miss it now but ended up breaking it for loads on ebay and american 924 sites.
insurance was less than £200 from lancaster insurance
