So I spotted this in the forum: and realised I want some, in brass, for my car. I've got a central dash-top speaker grille and two speaker grilles either side of the rear parcel shelf. Can they be bought, or should I try to make my own? How would I go about making these? Advice very welcome, as always.

Think they are called organ speaker grilles or something iirc The name helped... quick Google reveals they're available in chromed plastic (I hate chromed plastic... it's so... cheap) but cost $20-30 USD each (before P&P) and I can't seem to find any second hand. However, the pictures gave me a better idea of how they look and I reckon a trip to B&Q or similar and about £5-10 on some copper, chrome or aluminium pipe can achieve a better effect. Cut the pipes to length, get them really hot and melt them into the plastic I'm wanting to stick them in. Bit of glue if they're loose and bob's your mother's brother... in theory. I dunno, am I just tight? ETA: Nope, that idea's not tight, this one is - I've got some old pencil holder desk tidys that are about the same design. Cut them up, paint them accordingly. Done. XD

Okay, I don't really get what these are supposed to do, but wouldn't they look much better without a base at all? Just looking like they were rising up out of the shelf? I'd get some brass tube, cut to desired angles and so on. Then silver solder them together up the sides where they touch together. Failing that, some Araldite or metal adhesive would do.
You do get brass tube like this; I've used it to make clock weights in the past.

I don't know that they're supposed to 'do' anything... though I'm sure I could make something up about how the lengths of tube help direct and amplify the speakers by forcing the sound to reverberate from the rear window which acts as a giant soundboard. I think they look nifty and I do like your idea of losing the base. Where do you get the brass tubing from? That would be my preferred metal.

would probably work quite nice if under the shelf the speakers were in a ported box.
however i don't like the look, even in gothy hearse would look wierd, however Making a little chamber organ to run off a airtank, maybe using a redundant aircon pump. now that would be nice.

musical airhorns hiden inside would be great, and flashing lights, and flaps on top that pop open like on a truck exhaust.

@ w201lorinser and popuptoaster: You're both terrible influences, now I want to build tiny pipe organs over my speaker grilles... what's worse is that I have a friend who restores pipe organs who could and most likely would build them and delight in doing so!

If you made tiny pipe organs you could put them on electric motors so they rise out of the shelf, a bit like the organ used to do in old cinemas.... ;D ;D ;D...
I'll ge me coat....

they need to raise, revolve, start flashing, burp some flames out, and then play music accompanied by lots of dry ice smoke.

And finish the show with a flying pig crashing into the parcel shelf in flames... (One for all the old Prog rock fans)
