In reply to the person who queried the cost of boiler inspections, in my experience a boiler certificate for a small engine is not hugely expensive. Our boiler inspector charges about £100 per boiler for an annual visit during which he does a cold thorough exam and steam test. He has a borescope with video camera so you can see right inside the boiler and check all the nasty nooks and crannies where corrosion might be lurking, an ultrasonic plate thickness tester, and a deadweight tester for pressure gauges. If you lend him an extension lead and a socket he will print the boiler certificate off there and then.
Rupert - if you ever want to borrow a hydraulic boiler test pump and a calibrated gauge for testing your pressure gauge, please just ask. No charge.

Perrygrove- thanks for the offer of the hydraulic test pump, but we already have one. I think the reason why the wagons were derailing is because the buffers are different heights and so catching and sort of lifting the other wagons of the rails. Very few of the wagons are sprung and so they derail easily unless the track is perfect. The railway was run again while I was away and apparently it okay with no more derailments, but some issues with the injectors for the boiler. The track is already depressingly overgrown, but I think that this is inevitable between uses. It should only need a good session with the strimmer to clear it again. I've got no immediate plans for the railway since I won't be near it for a long while and I achieved my aim of driving the locomotive under its own steam from one end to the other. It probably won't be run again till next summer, but it should be nowhere near as much work to get it going again.

Nail a load of petrol strimmers onto a truck and push it in front of the engine?

Nothing's happened to it since it was last run. It's now fairly overgrown again, although this time round it would only need a quick strim to clear it all up again. I walked along it recently and part of the track has sunk down on one side which would probably need to be sorted before it was run again, although this would not be too major to sort out. There are no current plans to run it again, although I will probably get it going again at some point over the summer. I've got some videos from when it was run which I'll try and put up sometime.

What happened to this project? As an avid steam lover, I'd love to see what happened. I'm liking the replica 'Chaloner' de Winton class loco, neat.

Hi Rupert Two weeks ago, I did an internet search for narrow gauge railways and I came across this site and your railway; two of your photos gave me all the information I need, and my interest in maps, to do a search for your location; one photo showed the pump trolley and the farm buildings, this gave me the direction your farm faced NW and the other photo, pump trolley with two trucks, put you in a unique location within the UK. Within a couple of hours, I had found the farm but to be sure an aerial view showed the sloping extension to the barn, and with relevant searches, obtained your surname and phone number. It was me who phoned the number provided on the evening of 01/08/14, your Mom answered the phone and confirmed that a Rupert lived there; she was unsure about disturbing you because you had a bad night, stomach bug but I think that you had too much drink, anyway, I suggested that she said Retro Rides to you and you took the call.

Hi Geoff, looks like you did some serious detective work there! Sorry for not being more talkative as I do indeed have an ongoing illness at the moment but hopefully on the mend now.
The railway is currently non operational and overgrown once again, although we do have plans to have it running again next summer.

Hi Rupert I thank you for your reply, I am glad that you are on the mend, I suffer with IBS and that can be so draining (forgive the pun) to the body; I would love to see the railway running however I will respect your wish, if you only want family & close friends to see it. Geoff
