I've always want to go travelling, by car, and i may soon be in the position to do it. I'm just wondering, what car (retro or not, due to the fact new stuff breaks just as much as old stuff) would you use, bareing the following things in mind: - it needs to be solid and reliable,
- good mpg would be useful,
- avaliabilty of parts, in remote places, be it europe, africa, asia!
- room to sleep maybe?
- off road capabilities? but this would depend on your route,
- and its gotta look cool really
obviously you'd sacrifice somethings for other, but its all YOUR personal choice, if someone said you've got to drive from here to south africa, or here to china, what would YOU go in? Pictures would help, coz pictures always do, its only fun at the mo, don't start telling me about the dangers and all the rest

I'd use a camper van and sacrifice the mpg and speed for comfort and the ability to move about without having to get out, plus you'd have to make less compromises about what you took with you, of course it depends how far off road your planning on going.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

landrover disco tdi bullet proof mechanicals good spares around the world kitted out youd be hard pushed to find better just my own opinion but don't think I could drive a disco over any long journey I've driven buses with more comfort they are well under powered especially in auto form. I used to work for a 4x4 garage and had to go collect these all the time never driven a nice one including the TD5 . as for what car I would use for a long journey it would have to be an EL Tickford Falcon XR6 wagon drove mine back from Plymouth to Southend felt like i'd just driven round the block fantastic car on a run plus its a huge car so you could easily kip in it ;D finding one over here may be a little hard though ;D

Mercedes W123 230 estate. Parts aren't the cheapest, but there's a reason thousands of these get rammed into containers and shipped to Africa.

Yep, if I was going to Africa, one of these or an old Peugeot. Thousands of cars over there for spares and in the case of the Peugeout 505, produced in Africa until fairly recently (Egypt and Kenya IIRC?).

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

don't laugh but a Citroen BX (16V if you can get hold of one) Drove my old one to Southern Spain an absolute brilliant driver. Comfortable, quick, economical and cool.I slept in it, went offroad in it and drove it hard .Never let me down. Parts are easy to get at any scrappie so cheap to run. don't be put of by the suspension. 16v is the bizz! Iv had 4.

Old Jeep Grand Cherokee. Dirt cheap (might have a lot of miles), comfy, off road however may not be so good on fuel with the 4.8 hemi

A Datsun Bluebird estate... any model up to 910. Very rugged, very simple and utterly dependable. Can be fixed anywhere with just about anything but that's irrelevant as it would almost certainly keep chugging along just fine. I'd love to repeat the journey done back in the '70's in my '62 Bluebird, when the then owners made an epic trip from Sydney, Australia to Norway via Asia and up through Europe. Apart from a couple of accidents en-route, I don't think they had any problems with the car. It had already cover 150,000km before it set out on that trip too!

T4 transporter converted to a camper :-) I'm doing the same thing but only going as far as Portugal. The van was 2k and it cost me about 200 quid to kit it out with Ikea units and homemade wardrobes. Then all you need is a roof rack and a 7ft long roof box to put all your junk in.

My friends have just abandoned their journey from Cape Town back to England after being robbed at machete point in Kenya then again at gunpoint in Kenya again. They took a Landcruiser which was specced up massively to cope pics later.....

Another vote for the W123. Or maybe a Peugeot 405 diesel as they're so popular in northern africa.

Bluebird. Bombproof reliability, coupled with 35MPG around town... Say no more. Edit - some lads are taking my old bluebird on one of those charity rallies, to ethiopia or equador or somewhere beginning with 'E', it's a long way anyhow. I'd happily drive there and back in it several times, it was such a good motor! Edit 2, it's actually croatia.
