I'm going to build me one of those suitcase sound systems but don't really want to use a conventional head unit. Ebay seems to be overloaded with crappy chinese mp3 player amps claiming high output but i don't believe a word of it. Does anyone have any advice regarding a reasonably good quality but inexpensive 12v amp setup that will allow direct ipod input? The plan is to run it straight to a pair of 6x9's mounted into this ;D

I gathered my knowledge on here a few years ago about to run a solo amp with no headunit for iPods and the such. Install the amp like normal, earth, cable to the battery and speakers. But connect the amp remote wire (normally blue?) which is normally connected to the headunit to a 12v ignition live such as the headunit main power wire. It uses the 12v signal to switch the amp on. Then you need a double phono (?) to 3.5mm jack lead (£7-£10 from dixons or such like) to allow your iPod to connect to the amp. Easy. I've run this setup in about 4-5 cars now, recommended.
By the way I just use an old Sony amp powering two 6x9s in my current setup.

Was thinking of doing this ages ago. All I was going to do was use a 3.5mm jack going to the red and white connectors that go on an amp (sorry, don't know what there called) and then just hook the amp up to whatever.
I was going to be using my phone though. I understand that doing the same thing but using an iPod wouldn't sound too great as the iPod jack out is amplified, would then be amplified again by the amp resulting in a slightly distorted sound. Might be wrong though. So you'd need the proper connector in the bottom.

I use my iPod and the amplification range is about spot in IMO, comfortable but loud listening just over half volume I think, doesn't sound distorted for me. My HTC phone though is much louder in comparison.

i think the headphone jack and line-out on ipods is different. The headphone socket is amplified and affected by the volume but there is also an output in the docking connection which is pure line out - i think!?
So, what you are suggesting will still require a head unit being switched on so the amp can power up? or have i misunderstood that?

I can't comment on the sound differance because I never used mine on it. Go with Rob0r's opinion With the blue wire, just wire it to a switch and wire it all to something that comes on when the ignition's on.

I've been thinking about this for a while, currently i have the ipod, through the headphone jack, then into a stereo head unit, then off to amp - been thinking of deleting the head unit part and just running ipod- amp...
good tip on blue power wire, that was the kink in my thinking...

My Toledo came to me with just an amp connected up to a pair of 6x9's, which I connected an MP3 player up to. Sounded good. I am changing the hardware but keeping the same approach, Fitting some Vibe Lite stuff, not cheap but good for my cars anexoria. I have the old amp and speakers in my garage that I know worked fine if anyone is interested? Line in input on amp direct to 3.5mm lead and iPod, easy.
