get a screen from a scrappy there should be plenty of Mk3 in scrapyards and get a mate to help you fit it. You need screen glue, string and possibly new rubbers incase you muller yours removing the old one. You might be able to do it for £100 if you can find a cheap enough windscreen

they may be harder to remove than rubberseal screens, but theres a lot less chance of breaking it as you won;t be hoofing it out with your feet.

My friend got his sisters mk3s screen replaced professionally for about £200, I was under the impression it was autoglass that did it but I guess not, I'll try and find out who it was for you.

£410 sounds like a bit of a curse word take to me!
How long does it take and what is the hourly rate?

You need to look harder...I recently had a tinted mk3 golf screen supplied and fitted for £81!
I phoned quite a few places and the range was £81 to £120...don't know where you asked, but ask around some more...
EDIT- just seen you called autoglass...the big companies that do insurance work are never the best option...they charge the earth because the insurance companies just pay it...autoglass, auto windscreens, etc are always best avoided if you don't like being finacially raped
I used "Screen Saver"- I think they're a national franchise so have a look!

i'd perhaps try tamworth mobile windscreens - you may be slighly out of their area, but they get screens made etc and are independant.
If you book it in you should be able to drive to and from the place of repair as part of the MOT repair, which will save you a few £££ when negotiating price.
alternatively once you have a screen from a scrapper, get a local (independant) installer to fit - i wouldn't fancy the hassle of buying all the materials to fit a one-off bonded in jobbie.

try RAC windscreens too, i had a side window smashed and autoglass wanted double what i paid RAC and that wasnt for a tinted window which I needed. best of luck, it could have been worse than a cracked windscreen though

Exactly what I found as well. But if you know a fitter, may be worth going to say hello to him.. Now I'm not saying that windscreen fitters, or chip repairers are corrupt, but I'm yet to find one who isn't interested in a cheeky cash job.

My mums KA windscreen mysteriously cracked so I phoned around. All the insurance places wanted £400+ and would take 3 days before they could come out. Got it done for £80 an hour later, completely legit by some bloke who I'll probably be using again on the 106 to save masking round the screen when I paint it (I'll get him to take this screen out, then come back and fit a new one when I've painted the car. No sense using a 2nd hand/reusing my ropey screen when they are something like £30 new)
It's like when you get a quote for some bodywork and the guy asks if it's you, or the insurance paying for it.
On my Saxo I had 2 quotes from the same guy for what amounted to an OSF wing and indicator replacing. Insurance price was £1150+vat (writing the car off) and the cash price for the same job was £145.
Of course the insurance job comes with the use of the 1l Micra courtesy car and a full valet whereas the cash job would require me paying some chaps at an old petrol forecourt a tenner to clean it and borrowing my mums car for a few days.
