Here's something a bit different. In a bid to wind the clock back design-wise on the car I'm doing lots of little things, one of which is my steering wheel. For some reason, my steering wheel is a Mk1 Polo item from the Wolfsburg factory instead of a Mk2 item, perhaps it's because it's one of the first Mk2's, or perhaps it's because this is normal and I just haven't realised it. It's okay Retrowagen put me right on this one. Regardless, in the middle of the steering wheel is the horn boss on which is moulded the Wolfsburg factory crest of a red wolf howling in front of a castle over a moat, but slightly modernised for the 1980s. I set to with the enamel paints to bring it to life and, when I've given it a protective coat of varnish (which won't change how it looks here) it should look like an old-fashioned steering wheel boss. Quick scrub with some bathroom cleaner to get the grot out of the leather-effect plastic. No primer required. First coat of colours, very streaky. Second coat, blue is now ready, chrome looks good, but red is still a bit streaky. Final coat. Red is nice and solid, black areas have been painted to sharpen details, flat blue has had a single coat of metallic blue to immitate the original Wolfsburg crest. The angle it'll sit on the car, the colours looking vibrant and fresh. This took a while to do because it's 6 hours between coats and it's fiddly. All of it was done by hand with tiny brushes, the only masking I'll do is when I varnish the crest since I don't want the leather-plastic to be shiny. The varnish is merely to protect the paint since it's tougher than the enamel... I was going to experiment with a clear resin fill but since I don't know how UV stable it is and I don't have a back-up horn boss I decided not to risk it.

The Steering Wheel Boss looks Fabb!!! ;D Just be careful with what varnish or laquer you use as Enamel Often reacts with other types of paint and varnishes if the Enamel was the first applied it hard to over apply with something else Cant wait to see you paint the bodywork in Enamel Huggz Jodie

your steering wheel isnt a mk1 item just an early mk2 one... they used that on all low spec ones up till end of 85 (my loon had one) the mk1 wheel has the horn push all the way accross the spokes.. although from a glance it looks the same..

Glad you like it... I'm tempted to paint the steering wheel as well, but I'll probably resist the urge to do so for now.
While I think on, did you get my PM regarding the chrome hubcaps?

Sometimes people try too hard (or perhaps not hard enough), like here: cgi.ebay.co.uk/OLD-VOLKSWAGEN-POLO-RAT-LOOK-Hoodride-Hot-rod-Custom-/360278262760?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item53e24203e8However, this has given me a bit of a mojo boost since I've been putting off doing more sewing lately and window shopping instead. For when the eBay auction finishes, here's some pictures I saved. I'm thinking sunvisor. I'm thinking I want one. I'm thinking it needs to be bigger than the one above and better made. Big thanks to RR forum members chunkylover and retrowagen for getting a pair of proper lights, a glovebox that isn't broken and a tailgate to me, those things have been like poor quality wobbly children's play pony poop to find and between them they saved me a lot of trouble and a bit of cash.

Mmmm... Marmite. Not being doing anything worth taking photographs of, but I did run up a sketch. I seem to have drawn the whole thing too short, but it doesn't matter for now, this is only a concept sketch to get ideas clarified somewhat as I've been going a bit nuts with ideas lately. This is the first attempt to really get the ideas in my head down cohesively on paper. To explain: ~Rear arches given full spats. This will require the trailing edge of the sills to be remodelled and the rear valance to be squared off somewhat at least, but is something I really want to do. ~Chrome bumpers from (hopefully) a Triumph Dolomite... the dimensions seem similar enough. Number plates would be clipped beneath the bumpers and front indicators likewise I think. ~Exterior Sun Visor - I want one of these so badly, but it has to be massive and made of painted steel or red perspex. ~Wing mirrors and driver's door peep mirror. ~Bonnet trim with crosshairs mascot and mismatched chrome letters spelling out Volkswagen on the bonnet and tailgate. ~The squiggly stuff on bonnet, roof and side are actually those engraving/acanthus leaf/William Morris type designs mentioned at the start of the post as an alternative to flames. ~Lowered. It's going to happen sooner or later and this car *desperately* needs it.

I went and did some searching and came up with a decent digital template since I wasn't exactly happy with the sketch... so here's the pipe-dream version: Lakes pipes for the win, the comedy and the stretching and lowering look. This digital version is pretty much the same as above, but with a few tweaks like the red coach stripe, the low chrome side trim and the stock roof rack (which are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony poop to find). The spats look better in this version too, much closer to my intention. If it weren't for insurance, a lack of skill and not having money to burn, I'd happily chop about 6" out of the roof too... but never mind.

LOOT! Thanks to retrowagen and chunkylover for the lights, eBay for the bonnet mascot trim and the E. The kidney choppers aren't finished yet, got another one or two coats of red to go on the rim and possibly a third coat of chrome on the inside, they look much better than rusty chrome. Went to the local motor factor today to see if they did the paint I wanted, they did not. They directed me to a place very close to my house called Dacrylate who make paint for all sorts and next-to-nothing prices. So, including VAT I paid £40 for: 2.5 litres of black coach paint 1 litre of post office red coach paint 2.5 litres of red oxide primer 3" fine quality brush 1" fine quality brush 6p in the charity box I can't tell you how excited I am about this low price, it's phenominal. I'll let you all know how it goes when I set to using it, just need to get some sandpaper and some filler first to deal with any wibbles and dents in the bodywork, of which there are very few. @ Slacker - those are two nicely done Polos, the green one is lowered *just* right and the grey primer looks really good on the Mk2. Moon discs are okay, but they're a bit plain for my tastes, I like fiddly overwrought things, as you may have noticed.

Its a shame the weather has turned as the hot weather would of baked your paint lovely ;D I think your plans are spot on its gunna look Fabb!!! ;D £40 repaint ;D ;D ;D Who needs Bodyshops? Yeah, typical that the weather has turned in time for my visit to the workspace, but never mind, as long as I'm under cover I can paint stuff and set it aside to dry, it'll just take a bit longer. Just means I won't get the roof done, which is the best panel on the car and a sensible starting point. £40 for paint and prepping a pretty straight car myself or £1000 for a bodyshop to do it for me? No contest really.

The backflashes are something I plan to get fairly soon, there's a chap on the forums doing them for so cheap it's not worth looking elsewhere... but thanks for the tip.
There's a fair bit of 80s influence in the design. Idea in my head was "what if a goth owned a car in the eighties but couldn't afford something big and classic?" and so the concept was crystallised.
