It's not been a good weekend car wise, first my daily drive Toyota Corrola pops a front wheel bearing at speed on the M11 Friday night cue a desperate struggle for the hard shoulder and a ride in a recovery truck.. Then worse happened when I took the Camaro out for a spin.. Just got out of hospital with second degree burns to 90% of my face after going to tighten a dripping rad cap which unbeknown to me was just 'clinging' onto its fitting, just touched it and woosh a stream of hotter than boiling water right in my fizzog... cue screaming swearing tons of freezing cold water an ambulance ride and all afternoon/evening in hospital with all my skin falling of my face in lumps and absolutely no chance of getting on the plane at 9am tomorrow for my dream road trip holiday to the states/USA.. Boo Hoo, but thank god I was wearing specs which saved my eyes.. just a small lapse of common sense which I may be paying for a quite some time, it's good to remember that things like this can really do you damage.. Air cooled must be the way to go....

I actually have a good idea of how much that sucks. I had the same type of thing happen in a Porsche 924 over 15 years ago. I was wearing a jacket and the steam travelled up the sleeve to my armpit burning the whole arm in the process. It was excruciating. If the docs give you pain releivers by all means take them. I had no health coverage at the time and it was a white knuckle ride for a few days until the pain subsided.
Sorry to hear it. Get well.

I feel your pain to an extent, yesterday I attempted to cut the tips off two fingers as I was fixing a radiator fan. I got it working perfectly but wasn't sure what direction the fan was blowing in, so put my hand near to it to check. I was tired and didn't realise how close my fingers were. Luckily I'm trained in first aid and had the presence of mind to put pressure immediately on the wounds and had butterfly stitches to hand. Thankfully I keep a full first aid kit at my workshop in case of such an eventuality. All of you do the same, one at home, one in the car and one most definitely in your workshop.

I must say that's quite an upbeat post considering the circumstances, heroic even. By the sounds of it though it could've been much worse - if you can be here posting on RR on the day it happened then it ain't all bad.
Best of luck, dude. America will still be there for the next trip and it'll be much better with the use of your eyes...today was a good day.

I couldn't agree more, I am generally a positive person and like to see the good side wherever possible and i cant help but see how lucky i was, if the wheel bearing was going to sh!t itself at speed i was so lucky it didnt lock up completely and send me uncontrollably into the central reservation, and when i nursed it to the hard shoulder amid a cloud of sparks and plumes of smoke it dumped me into a ''works access' layby that gave access to both sides of the motorway, and left me with a nice field to walk the dogs round whilst waiting for the recovery truck who was a good sort and made the journy home much better!
With the Camaro I really should have known better, not just as pro mechanic just a normal person with common sense should have seen what could happen, the car had developed a leak in the top hose which i noticed when i'd parked up after i'd got to the shopping centre where i was going, so when i'd done my shopping and got back to the car i topped it up with evian bought at an extortionate price from a vending machine (all i could find) made a torniquet from the power lead of my road angel and and some bits of plastic to cover the split in the hose and hoped it would make it home, i got stuck in traffic going out of Reading ( quelle suprise) so the engine got hot and spat out most of it's water through the split, so in the garage i filled the empty expansion tank to see if it'd suck some water back into the radiator which it did, but when it did it started dripping from the pressure cap, so without thinking or searching for a rag i just reached out to tighten it a tad, literally as my fingers touched it to tighten it (quickly and gingerly as i knew that would be warm) it flew straight off and a stream of scorching fluid hit me literally square in the face..
As i said, i was straight in the garage in the kitchen area with my head under a tap, a nice chap who worked in the car wash locked my car up and brought me my wallet (with helpful comments like 'whooa man, your face is coming off') and my phone which of course I'd forgotten about, so that was a stroke of luck as this area of Reading is rough as hell, the MHS ambulance guys couldn't have been better after the useless private paramedic refused to take me in his car and called the ambulance and the A&E people were just superb could not have been better in any way i was looked after treated sympathetically, and even took my rubbish jokes and silly comments from behind my mummified face wraps in the spirit in which they were intended..
Either way but a for a quirk of fate i could have lost my eyesight temporarily or even permanently I have second degree burns with the chance of small areas of third degree which I will find out on Monday at a specialist bruns unit, but if so the bad areas will probably be small enough for laser treatment and skin grafts are looking quite unlikely to be needed which mean any permenant scarring is likely to be minor, so all in all that's a damn sight better than it could have been.
The holiday is insured and i don't think America is going anywhere soon either, and i have a great forum with so many kind people and kind comments to while away the long night on (I cant sleep due to not being able to rest my head/face anywhere) so i have read every build thread that i never had time to read all of!
At the end of the day i posted this partly to have a whinge but also just to show how dangerous simple things like this can be, a bit of a never get to comfortabe with car mechanics as machines have no mercy and complacency and confidence aren't always good things, as both I am Amazo have proved..
Hope your fingers heal buddy, and yes i have got a face covered with a good thick coating of petroleum jelly, which looks and feels disgusting esp as my long hair keeps sticking in it and sinking/sticking into the soft skin underneath yuk yuk yuk
thanks again guys!

yeah, you'd think so anyway, last night i was vowing to sell the camaro and i was pretty ambivalent about leaving it in a rough area of reading overnight...
But my my long suffering and ever wonderful missus went to retrieve it today with the help of the RAC they bandaged the pipe up filled it with water and found the rad cap some 20 feet from the car, and followed her home, and as i heard that big ole V8 get a bootfull coming down our road and then up our long steep drive i couldn't help but think mmmmmmm, that'll sound even better when i fit the true duel exhausts with magnaflow silencers...

Savage! really hope things pick up, and the damage is less than initially observed.
I always put a thick / heavy rag over rad caps, especially after I saw the mythbusters episode where they worked out how to super heat water, which would violently boil if anything was put near it.
fingers crossed for the burns specialist meeting mate
