PMSL!!! Yeah, and a short skirt .... *shudder* god that doesn't even bear thinking about!!!
Tom, you really have fallen in love with the place haven't you? And I can see why after an experience like you've had!!
If I'm honest, I'm less bothered about the car than I am the adventure. I love doing spur-of-the-moment-family-rolling-eyes-and-thinking-I've-lost-it stuff like this

I've just been messed around again this morning by somebody who's meant to be buying my Starlet, what with Mr Bs recent travels and now this journey of epic proportions, I'm tempted to sell it for a fiver to somebody in Nigeria. Then offer to deliver it.
Back to the subject in hand, euro cover is a good idea, I've used cover arranged through HIC in the past and had to use it with no complaints, much the same as Tom's experience in fact.
Short of that, take a head scarf and some old school Raybans for yourself and get keefy to wear some sort of tweed apparel and leather driving gloves. Just the sort of thing one should wear on a european traverse... Once again, I'm very envious ;D

Just as long as it doesn't involve some sort of nose dive off the cliffs of Dover on your return...

sounds like a proper good mission...
closest I've come to that is driving up to Bolton to pick up a '65 Bug.... the return journey didn't last though.. the handbrake had seized on and the back wheels locked up on the motorway and we rac'd it back to Buckingham! (cheats!)

One minute we're talking stretched tyres and the next everybody's trying to find Starlets in far-away places! ;D
Good luck!

Sounds like a right hoot! A spare set of headlight bulbs would be good. I think the French authorities insist on them and there may be other 'essentials' for safe passage as well. Don't forget to stop en route for some wine and cheese.
Good luck, I wish it was me!

I wanna play! What a cool mission - we will be requiring full photographic documentation of the whole trip of course! ;D

Oh there will be plenty of photographic evidence. Got a few things to sort but shall keep you posted about progress I've just sneaked in leaving Keefy, his best mate Bill and two pit monkeys cutting, cleaning and welding the 411. There's been some really good progress today (motivated by the old line "I want that car off my drive ASAP" from poor Bill who needs to get a 5 speed conversion into his Midget before Le Mans) so fingers crossed there might be some more car news before long
