my new Fury has a rear window which resembles cardboard, literally gone brown and can't see anything at all through it. Anyone managed to get one back to see-thru? I see there are commercially available 'restorer' products but how bad can the plastic be before that won't do anything? What else works? Sanding it down then mopping?

If the rest of the top is in good condition then I'd be getting an automotive trimmer to unstitch the window and replace it with new plastic. That old one will never be as good as a new sheet of plastic, no matter what witchcraft you perform on it.

When we bought the MX-5, the plastic window was really milky - we used something similar to this to get it as see-through as we could. (Although it turned out for us that the best solution was to replace it with a sheet of glass!)

I decided to scotchbrite then mop with G3. Its an improvement cosmetically certainly but still can't see much through it.

That old one will never be as good as a new sheet of plastic, no matter what witchcraft you perform on it. Had the same problem with a 1968 VW Trekker hood - clearly no spares available so a local upholsterer replaced the plastic screen for £50. He was in an industrial estate between Guildford and Woking if you want me to pop in and get his details?

Yeah get it replaced, a decent trimmer should be able to do it for under £100 as it should only take a couple of hours, unless there's summat really tricky about that particular one, had a few customers get theirs done this way and they're very pleased, i can really recommend trimmania www.trimmania.co.uk/services.aspx?PageId=55 in Reading they do a cracking job and they have done several custom interiors, tonneau's, complete double skinned hoods and replacement windows for us...

If it's seen as much sun as it looks as it has, as has been said, get it unpicked and a new sheet sewn in. Looks as though it folds down flat which would probably be your saviour but bear in mind, as soon as winter hits that'll crack up and leak. G3 is a bit harsh and isn't rated for optics plastic. Stuff we used at work on the airplanes was Meguiar's #17 and #10- cleaner and polish. Rated for aircraft lexan windows and doesn't dissolve the surface layer of the plastic. Also really good on rear lights (PMMA), dash gauge plastics (PVC) etc where the top layer is usually brittle as anything and will craze easily. It's not a Halfords item, but if you're passing Shoreham-By-Sea stop in at the airport, they should have it at the pilot shop, or might be able to get it for you fairly cheaply. Might be somewhere closer to you that has it as well, thinking of it. --Phil

If you want to try and get the original window back into shape, you could try to polish it with silver/copper polish, it'll first get blurry but after a while it will get better, keep rubbing..
I've used it on sunglasses before and worked perfectly.

Did the upholsterer do the window in situ or did you or he take the hood or rear curtain off? the curtain looks hard to remove on mine, well , hard to put back probably. My other fury has a glass back window. I think it would be cool to get a heated one from a modern put in there. Hmmm.

For the cost of restoring the original window, you could probably buy a whole new rag-top. Replacing the window certainly sounds the right thing to do. Usually the reason they go opaque like that is that tiny crack appear over time, dirt gets into the cracks. You've cleaned some of the dirt out of the cracks, it seems, but the problem would still remain. you could seal the cracks after cleaning but as soon as you fold the roof, you can kiss that solution goodbye.
