Holy Tin worm!!!! That frightens me just to look at it! Excellent work matey. I would have run a mile, especially with my little Clarke 90. Well done for taking the project on and saving an otherwise scrap car. You'll be welding in the Oldbus class by the time you have finished! ;D

little update as i've had a cpl days break due to bad weather etc got the sill supports in place and welded in the sill vertical supports and seam sealed them all in lower rear quarter tacked in place was a proper faff to get right as we had no datum to follow. cut the part that meets the sill and tacked it in just to strengthen the front boxing we shaped the sill on some 2" back iron pipe and then smoothed it over some 4" truck exhaust just to get it somewhere near quick check down the sill to check the line seems ok fully welded up i put a small flange on the bottom of the sill to join the floorpan and plug welded it to the inner sill smoothed all the weld with a flap wheels just needs a likkle skim of filler coat of zinc primer start on the other side tomorrow oh joy! cheers for looking

Great work! Don't forget to drill in some drain holes, or else it will be a repeat of what you were faced with before

yeah i'm gonna put some 8 mm holes in the bottoms then use the slide hammer to swage them down a little to drain more it is all zintec in there all waxoiled through the hole in the inner sill too
i took ages to get it done because all the strengtheners were gone so we had to make it up as we have gone along to a certain extent

had a couple of hours spare this evening so i cleaned up the sill cut out the rest of the bad stuff and made a pair of patches up ready to stick in............. ....so i cut out the swaged strengtheners as they were rusted at the base best to make sure its clean bit of rusty steel at the back arch so i cut it back again so i can rejoin fresh to it then using angle grinder and a cup brush cleaned it up then covered it all with hydrate 80 rust stabiliser back to the rear arch cleaned up the jointing surfaces to put a little support into it as the quarter was flapping around support tacked in place support seamed all along the side and top spotted to inside of quarter new inner arch repair panel put in place to check the fit from the inside i think i am going to overlap it so will cut it along the mark and seam it either side to make it secure again i hope this might be of some use to someone cheers for looking dave

oh well back to the grind, I had to make a lower panel to make up the sill piece that had rusted away camera had died so I missed the early stages of measuring etc. however I folded the steel over onto itself to form a double thickness flange and cut it to shape then I bent it to follow the rear of the sill oh the big slice in the seat bottom lie on was when the slit disk on the angle grinder tried (unsuccesfully to remove all the flesh from my forearm ;D) stretching it and forming it to follow the lines the top part matches up with the strengthener I had already welded in it fits rather well however it is not welded in yet so when I let go of it to take a piccy it dropped a bit lol last bit tonight was to replace the main sill support which I have cut out with my tin snips and folded the edges to make it the same thickness as the original at the weld points, bit more tomorrow then its off to the garage for a turn on the 4 post ramp as I hate welding upside down thanks for looking dave

well as it is an import it will be basically rust free*
*1 as long as it has been properly waxoiled *2 as long as it ain't been over here for 5 or 6 years as they soon follow their British cousins down hill
but as always everything can be sorted all the parts are available (not cheap though) which is why i am making my own lol
cheers anyway i may pop round fro a brew monday / tuesday text me yer number i will ring first so i don't have a long wasted trip pmsl dave

The MX5 is a car I had considered buying sometime (especially after seeing a Miata track day at Laguna Seca last month). Is this rust fairly typical of a 1990 or is yours a bit of an exceptional case? I can't believe it had got to such a state for a relatively modern car. There was one on TV's Wheeler dealers recently but I missed seeing it.

no not really they only go like this when the sills fill with water due to blocked drain holes, main problem being you do not know this is the case untill you hear water sloshing about in them or it falls out of the sills with half a ton of iron oxide lol
