I used Flux, because they were about the only people who only asked me "It's a Vauxhall What? Ok, please hold..." a few times before finding it in some database somewheres.
Didn't help that I was 21 at the time, technically had no NCB because I'd been named driver on my mother's car previously, so they found the largest diameter pole and reamed me for every penny of my modified bodyplan, modified engine, modified number of seats, modified exhaust, nonstandard colour, the list goes on (but sir, that all pales really after you said it's bodyplan is modified, sorry).
2200 notes later I was all legal but that was painful. Never had to claim on them- and by the age of 26 the premium had dropped to 1400- still painful but not exactly cheap.
Personally I wonder what/if/how they'd plan on paying out on the vehicle, and if I'd done better going elsewhere. I think I just had the cards stacked against me.
I'm still trying to figure why the premium for my bog-standard Hillman Superminx was over 600 quids, with 2 years NCB, clean licence, good neighbourhood and a driveway...
Oh well. I look back on that fondly, after the insurance for my stock 2006 truck here costs me about 2400 a year to insure.
Never complain about insurance in the UK again, I tell myself.
