I think some of you guys are missing th point. Doovla have always operated on the basis of it's the reg. keeper's responsability to ensure the DVLA recieve any posted correspondence. That isn't possibile without using speshul/recorded delivery. Doovla can only enforce that if they use it themselves (which they don't, because it costs ££££s). The cases also showed Doovla's insistance they never loose letters in their internal post is a fallacy.

As long as you are prepared to stand up in court and swear "you posted the sorn notification" their case will be thrown out. You have filfilled your duty to the letter of the law.

The RDW is the dutch equivalent of DVLA and it's an administrative mess too, mainly because it's a database from many years ago that has to be updated to new systems once in a while and then things go wrong. There have been reports of people getting tax bills for car's that were scrapped 15 years ago.. go and find your counterevidence...
Over here when a car is transferred from one owner to another it's status get set back to taxed and new owner is charged automatically, and the previous owner get's his paid tax back. New owner has to sorn it, you can do all that at the post office and get the proof directly in your hands. That allmost never goes wrong.

What practical purpose does SORN actually fulfill? I read somewhere that SORN was introduced purely to provide a legal means to do away with the old 'tax is in the post' routine. Apparently, a substantial number of drivers were nicking a month between when the old disc ran out and then getting the replacement and if they got stopped were using the postal service as the get out. Which probably isn't an unreasonable excuse the way the post is these days. This way they've created a 'new offence' if you are caught on the road without a valid disc. Everyone whinges about Europe but they don't have 'car tax' over there. What I wanna know is how come we don't get the benefits of the European system..... only the sh*t! Our politicians are a bunch of lying bullsh*tters when it comes to anything European. They'd probably say that the europeans say we have to have car tax, if you tried to cross examine them about it.
