I've tried searching but to no avail Can anyone recommend a good insurer for modified classic cars? I'm 25 and will be running a carb'd redtop in a Opel Kadett C along with alot of other mods. I'm looking for some kind of agreed value. I've never had the car insured so I don't have any idea where to start. I've tried Adrian Flux who gave me an outragos quote. Can anyone help? have a few pics of my past/present cars for your time

Depends to a great extent on what a Kadett C is (sorry I should know that on here...). If it's Mk1 Astra or later then I think you'll struggle to convince Adrian Flux etc that it's 'classic', and you'll be in the same boat as Pimp My Ride type Saxos. You will find it difficult I'm afraid.
Best bet is still to go looking for a classic policy, and the normal ploy applies - ie limited mileage, not your sole car, not kept on road side over night. Also join an appropriate club, but try to pick something that sounds posh (like 'Heritage' in the club name rather than 'Modified').
Good luck though!

I always wheel them out when this question gets asked, but Brentacre are great. they specialise in VW cover, but will quote on anything. they are a small family run brokers in Swansea, google them for the number.
They cover me (25) on a Mk1 scirocco with a 2.0 16v engine conversion (can go up to 180bhp without having to pay extra as long as I let them know what i have done), parked on the street in Central Cardiff, 10,000 miles a year including full business use for...... £300/yr fully comp!

peter james insurance
I'm 27, 3 points, epileptic (restricted license). The car is valued at 6K, unlimited miles, fully comp, engine conversion, lowered etc - all declared - kept in carpark at night (not secure)...
£98 per year
The car has to be pre '87 or '89...I cant remember
Oh, and it cost me an extra £8 to add my '79 Laurel to the policy (also unlimited miles)

some insurers blow a gasket with engine swaps. I am with Peter James and when I spoke to them on the phone to get my quote they were like "its a 40 year old American car, its bound to be modified, even the modern ones are usually" which is a helpful attitude.

I loved it when I told them Id lowered the Cedric 5 inches and they didnt even bat an eyelid!

Peter James for me now too as well. They knocked a third off what Footman James wanted for my recent renewal on the Hillman.

O RLY ? I've used FJ for a while. Generally okay but always a curse word to get hold of on the phone. 2 tries and nearly 2 hours to get the porker swapped on to the S12's policy last month, ffs...

Yep - i can highly reccomend them too - as I have and will in every other insurance thread - real petrol heads too. they seemed almost dissapointed that my engine was standard! no admin fees or charges on cosmetic mods, or any mods under the nominated bhp limit - can't say farer than that.

I find Footman James are good if your car's not quite retro yet, but just old.
They'll put anything over 15 years old on a classic policy, which meant my '94 seven series sneaked in on limited mileage. A 4 litre 300bhp V8 luxo barge, driven by a 27 year old with 3 points for a smidge over £200 for the year, I thought that was pretty reasonable.
When I got my 3 series (which is only 13 years old) they insured it as a 'future classic' for similar money.
They are a pig to get hold of on the phone though, wasted hours of my life on hold to them.

Would have suggested Quinn before they hit the rocks. They're writing insurance in the UK again but their quotes make nowhere near as nice reading as they used to, from a young drivers POV.

I also recommend both Brentacre and Peter James, though I did have a strange encounter with PJ at a car show the other day. Thought I'd ask about a quote for the Volvo whilst I was there 'We don't insure modified cars with young drivers' 'You sure? My girlfriend is 19 with a modified Mk1 Fiesta insured by you' 'oh, umm, dunno then' Much better on the phone

On recommendation after reading this thread ,I tried Brentacre. Almost double the price from my first quote, due to their insurers not classing it as a classic.

what car was that on rod? they don't just do classics - they do modified moderns too so I find that quite surprising. I saved about £60 over AF's best quote and got better cover.

RH Specialist for me. I've had various cars with them over the years and always been happy with the quotes from a 1966 MGB to a 1998 Escort cabriolet. I think they can give a classic policy to anything over 10 years old. I think I have had some slight modifications (air dams, alloys, lowering etc) which were OK, but i've never asked about engine swaps.

my yellow Kadett C Coupe with cage and SRI130 motor was with CIC, a Colchester based broker. They were reasonable enough and fitting the Safety Devices cage made no difference to premium because 'it doesn't make the car any faster' The Mini and kit car are now with Flux cos they were helpful and the quote reasonable. Phoned FJ about the Mini when it was due and they spat their dummies out cos it was modified and didn't even have the courtesy to reply to my email (which they requested) to refuse me cover
