Right I'm tending to keep quiet here lately... I'm just plodding along in real life atm and come on here to chill out and see whats new in the world of retros... I'm finding it a bit less fun when i click threads that look interesting and find theres numerous posts regarding vw's negatively... I'm not going to name names , and I'm all for open ness regarding what you do and don't like... thats fine as everyone is different.. not everyone likes the same thing. But when its completely unfounded and saying things like why bother its just another dub.... it makes no sence.. and more to the point isnt exactly very in spirit with the rr ethos is it?
Id like to add.. ive kept my mouth shut about this , as ive hoped it was just a lil moment people were going thru. But it seems more like its a fashionable thing to do right now... and i hate to say it but a few of my mates who have vw's and i have all felt we don't seem to be very welcome in that respect.

There's a few people on RR that don't seem to understand what this place is about, and spout their negativity all over the place. Seem's like it's VW's turn. Last time it was BMW's. It's the same bunch of people spoiling what people have put a lot of time and effort into building, and it's driving the decent members away. P*sses me off to be honest. I think the best course of action is to go find some awesome Dubs and post them up. The RR members who contribute positively to the RR community will appreciate it, and it makes the board a better place. The haters and whingers can go jump.

Id be inclined to show them just how enthusiastic you are towards VWs! This forum is very good at what it does but it doesnt really allow debate and passionate reasoning. Negativity isnt always such a terrible thing, it gives YOU the opportunity to show your enthusiasm, your dedication and love for all things VW. There was many a car that i used to detest, Allegros for example. I'm old enough to remember their introduction, old enough to remember when they infested the streets and highways of our pleasant land and i was not overly concerned at their slow and gradual demise. The thing is, since reading about them from owners here, seeing just how enthusiastic they are, what can be done to them etc, etc, well, i would quite like to own one!! its not too difficult to turn negativity to positivity, the worse case scenario is that those who are negative will take a neutral standpoint and respect what you stand for. You don't have to fight your corner, all car nuts will empathise just as all Football supporters understand the pain and joy of watching thier chosen team. Keep posting Sir!!

I've noticed it too. I've always put it down to the fact the the VW scene/world/lifestyle has so many followers, a really good parts backup, a jam packed season of shows and enough magazines each month to keep WHSmith happy that some people are just jealous and have to pick on us!
Drop one of us moderators a PM if you read something you think is overly negative and we'll investigate for you. It shouldn't matter what the make is, but to some it sadly does

I find vw's very samey, dull almost, its all been done before etc... And i admit, i do have a good rofl when i see some of the prices and things.
I'm not anti them at all, i've had a few, like i said though, dull!
I wont ruin a post for the sake of it though, just show me summat intersting and fresh!

Gotta agree with you there, samey and dull.... ....all I saw at Volksworld was Baja styled brasilias.... ...and air ride mid engined V8 Spilt screen campers are 10 a penny

I find vw's very samey, dull almost, its all been done before etc... You see this is where a lot of the problem comes from I think,.. people think they've seen it all before because they spot a cal-looker or a rat look car in the photos from VW events, but somehow go instantly blind to the amazing original cars being shown too. (this isn't a pop at you btw 2002gimp !) I was blown away by some of the clever and (almost more importantly) completly realised ideas at Volksworld.

Tbh i've not been to a vw show since i sold me camper, but i was getting tired of the fields looking like a dockyard!
I do love the baja, but the camper is just another decked camper, no matter what its running imo
Actually the last vw i really apprichiatd was the brown t25 with the sunken arials etc, very nice!!!
As mentioned before though, i wont go spouting hate for any random reason!!!

but the camper is just another decked camper, no matter what its running imo But its not, theres a massive amount of engineering thats gone into it, the chassis has been completely reworked to move the engine a couple of metres forward from where it should be. Remove the blinkers and look past the badge on the front

i know what ya saying, but the prob is the place is saturated with them, so all people do see is another camper! I'd hate to think of the work involved, like i said, i loved the scene, but it all got very, well like i said, samey! I agree there's a few jewels in amongst the norm, but it gets boring trying to find them!

Worthersee will address the balance, doubt that even the biggest dub despiser's will not find something they like in the pics from there on a VW. I guess overexposure plays a part as it dulls the senses to what is truly great, and greatness is there to be found. Currently owning a BMW and VW I guess I could be double put out but TBH I couldn't give a xxxx for anyone else's negative opinion on my ride because it is mine and I like it. Have some scene leading Mk3 golf action to show um where it's at ;D Meh, maybe not. Looks weller on the p slots but punctures and lack of cash means I'm keeping it steel for now. Chin up and keep posting the good.

I've seen it from both sides.. I've noticed a lot of the threads that get a lot of comments and highlighted are non VW threads and I've also noticed that majority of the comments on my project thread are just from fellow VW owners, well pretty much sure that they all are
I read and appreciate any retro, in fact pretty much everything fuel related.. lol
For me tho it should be simple - if you don't like it and think its dull - no need to comment or slate it, its each to their own..
I first started in VW's heavily in the air cooled scene and as mentioned above you could soon start with, oh look another bus - but somethings got to be right to see so many of these 30-60 year old vehicles on the road.. at a guess i bet its fair to say nearly half of all classics on the roads (and by that i mean used regularly) are from the VAG group
Its cos of this that some think they are dull and boring, same old.. For me I kind of agree, for the last coupel of years, mk1 and mk2 golfs on BBS split rims are everywhere, if not polished on BBS splits, then ratty or just daily's..
Partly why i sold all my MK1 Goofs and dropped out of running the mk1 golf owners club and bought the Santana.. (ok i just had a mojo flop and contemplated selling it) why did i get the santana - might be dull to some, but it was VW's answer to the Granada and in my trim its equivelant to a 2.8 Granada Ghia, but most overlook that fact cos I guess its just another VW..
Retro rides should be what it says on the tin - retro rides and has always had a great community so look beyond the badges everyone...
If its a Rolls royce or a Skoda thats getting the love, look beyond the badge as someone will love that car and rather than kick them when they feel a little low - give em a boost up and say summit good
Spreading the happy mojo love helps and works wonders!!

You should try owning or (horror of all horrors) actually liking Vauxhalls. Every badge snob and his wife seem to be queuing up to slate you at times. Not on here (well, not in a long while) to be fair but they are out there.

I can't say I've ever noticed an anti-VW thing on here. Either I'm looking in the wrong places, not looking in the right places or I am completely oblivious to it seeing as I follow no badge, no marque, no scene.
My contribution to this thread my not be much help but I just wanted you to know that there are people out there in the Retro Rides community who embrace all cars as being cool. I would say with confidence that most I know personally are very much the same. As an example, at the last playday we had a VW T25, 2 x Merc 190's, Mk3 Cavalier, Mk2 Polo, K10 Micra, Mk1 MX5, Vitara, Rover 220 Tourer, Volvo 240, Escort Mk5 and a Subaru Legacy (to name but a few....and excluding any of mine) and each of the cars listed was admired, talked about and became the focus of the general group at some point over the weekend.
I think wherever you go you'll come across some people who are marque specific, but this doesn't mean to say that they are particularly 'anti-VW' but more 'pro' whatever their particular marque is. This is probably, and quite likely, true of some VW owners too.
For the time being, I am going to continue to enjoy the variety and diversity that Retro Rides has to offer. A range of marques, cars and people that can be found nowhere else. Nowhere ;D
