Just picked up my new ride off ebay, a bargain MG Montego, I am just not sure what mods to do with it. It definately needs to be a lot lower, any advice on the best way to go about this is welcomed, I am thinking of replacing all the red badges, trim etc with a bright green like the MG X Power use. These pics are as it is now, borrowed from the original ad, all I have have done so far is sealed the rear light units as I found a gallon of water in the boot now nice and dry, and fitted a radio. I know these old Montego's aren't loved by many but I am going to try my best to make it look a little more cool

I am thinking of replacing all the red badges, trim etc with a bright green like the MG X Power use. ^^ THIS ^^ Does not compute. Especially when you write things like this: .....but I am going to try my best to make it look a little more cool The red stripes & logos are epic. Everything about this car is awesome in that cheesy 80's black/red/white way. PLEASE don't change it! I know these old Montego's aren't loved by many Errrr - I think you'll find it gets a whole lot of love in this place. To make it cool, as far as I'm concerned, is a case of A) leave it stock, enjoy it as it is (unmolested) or B) hit it with a stick and put some uber rims on it...then roll it. Nothing more needed. It's an unloved underdog of the 80's that is now so hard to find, let alone in original condition, that people will appreciate a lot more than some of the more obvious hot motors from the same era (Vauxhall & Ford). I'm certainly one of them.

so I take it, changing the red/black/grey theme is not a good idea then, ok point taken its the 80's look, but any ideas on getting it slammed and wheel options for one of these?

I agree with the others. Leave it stock, but for lowering a little bit. Montegos never looked good modded back in the day and you are not likely to improve it. TBH, the best thing to do to this car is get it looking as near to factory fresh as possible. Put it this way a concourse MG Montego will look 10 times better than any other

That was for sale on here too......at £350 you've got yourself an uber-bargain. MG Montegos are scarce beasts these days (especially that straight) and WAY better cars than many would have you believe.
I think they share PCD's with MGF's at 4x95. A set of MGF rims in gloss black would look dead hard with 50mm out of the suspension. Keep the stock bits safe, and bung 'em back on when you come to sell it. You'll get your money back and more.

What I would do, and I'm by no means an MG expert, but your green idea could work if executed to a very high standard, green trim in place of red, green MG badging, and I would find some dishy 80's rims for it. Something perhaps along the lines of the 3 spokes that came on Saab 9000 Carlssons. Maybe Vauxhall Lotus Carlton style wheels. I wouldn't try to do anything much to the bodywork - I love boxes. Exhaust as well of course!

I cant understand why folk get into this 'I MUST MODIFY MY CAR' mindset. By all means modify it if you have some sort of plan and are trying to achieve something. But whats the point in modifying for the sake of it? 'I don't KNOW WHAT WANT TO DO TO MY CAR, BUT I MUST DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING, HELP ME OUT HERE GUYS'. If you don't know what you want to achieve you are almost guaranteed to end up with something proper half-ar$ed and another rare interesting old car will have been spoiled.

I think those ones look superb as standard to be honest, really nice choice of wheels from the factory. However, if you do want to modify it 80s style though, you might as well abandon the X-Power stuff as they weren't around back then! Why not kit it out with some nice turbine wheels, something along these lines (you'll need adaptors by the sounds of the PCD): Then just bosh in some premium audio a bit like this: And if the seats are a bit tatty (I wouldn't do it if they were nice), chuck in some Recaro fishnets (and for bonus points have the rear seats trimmed in the same material): But to be honest, I wouldn't mind one of those just as-is, they're an appealing package as-is.

I used to sell these new!
The MG Montego is a very good, capable car to drive. The chassis is very good, so don't lower it too much - unless looks is the only thing that matters to you.
If you want more power, there are various options - T16 turbo engine from a Rover 820 vitesse or 620ti would be nice - 200bhp. Same block, so should be do-able.
Nice car, looks good condition. Post some more photos if you can

Any ideas lol, just get out and enjoy it! As Mr B mentioned above, don't modify it for the sake of doing so as you could very easily end up with a hash job that lacks direction, you end up disliking it and have to flog it off cheap when the MOT runs out due to not having the heart to keep it up to scratch. I was going to buy this myself if it hadn't sold still in a few weeks time, you've got yourself a great car with great looks, only modify it if you're not happy with something and know how you want to go about improving it.

Well, thanks for all your feedback guys its always nice to get different peoples opinions of whats good and bad.
I am going to concerntrate on getting the bonnet, roof and bootlid painted as they are very badly faded, get the idle speed problem sorted, get some new material for the headlining as it has been botched up due to the sagging and finally fit some 50mm shorter springs.
I should hopefully have these little jobs done in the next few weeks, so I will see how he is looking then.
Also, managed to get the 80's alarm system working today, very high tec ;D
I will put a couple of more pics tonight when it stops raining.

Post some more photos if you can John The 620 and 820 will drop in but the front cross member has to have a cut out for the turbo, I used to have a black MG Monty turbo was epic for a 155mph tin can, cut the springs and it was an rs turbo beater back then..... Had mine black and gold look wicked with a pure genius guiness harp on the rear..... Used to be a company in Essex called Moto-build racing, top guys with full kits and all the mods.... Oh Vauxhall wheels go on these as do vw

Those sexy shots just reaffirm that I couldn't lower this if I'd snatched it in time. However, you handed over the readies first and I did see you mention lowering springs, (I think,) as apposed to just chopping the original ones so i'll reserve judgement until I see it done. I'm glad the alloys are growing on you, just pop down to the nearest poundland and you can pick up a pack of 5 toothbrushes for, surprise surprise, a pound, lol. I had no idea the headlining was quite that bad........

That has potential to be an A1 car; a very good buy.
If the roof/bonnet/boot problem is UV (sun) damage (does it look like millions of tiny cracks when you look really closely?) then it will need to be taken back to bare metal for a lasting result.
Good luck with the roof lining... I hate doing those!
