Taking pictures of things is a rather big hobby of mine, and I'm steadily building up a nice collection of stuff. Cameras being a Canon 20D as my main, and an older 300D as backup: 300D with an 18-55mm kit lense on, 20D sporting a fetching 28-200mm (F3.8-5.6) 20D with my flash unit (flash, comedy grip thing and tripod all from around mid 80's to early 90's, so some retro stuff ) Oh and I picked this up the other day: Only had a chance to take this with it: i960.photobucket.com/albums/ae89/CaptainMatt87/AwrightPetal.jpgHotlinked cause its not a car. I have no car stuff taken on the 20D (but dragstrip on Monday so will then) so heres some stuff taken on the 300D Turns out I don't have that many car stuff thats decent, or I do and I can't find it, so here's a picture of the Bluebird in the snow. Taken in pitch darkness, with only the light from the stars. 15 second shutter and me with a torch. Good example of lightpainting as well as long shutters/night shots Long post. I'll shush now.

Just to keep this Retro and Cars....here are some night time shots I've taken. Hand held...no tripod and no flash. High ISO was my friend on these occasions (maybe a steady hand induced by excess alcohol too!) *insert lots of awesome shots here* O/T but what lens you using bruce? I imagine its got a large area of glass/low F number yeah? as for flash at night, it can blow everything up, but it can work wonders. I like to use open flash, which contrary to my usual style of snapping takes some setting up. you need a tripod for one and a long exposure. I use an olympus e500 (champion of the underdog!) I love it but I used to have an s5600 fuji bridge, which I took this on- it has a bit of "noise" in it, thats the grainyness you get from using a high iso number. as said earlier, you can't buy a good eye for a shot and don't be afraid of seeking advice, whether its reading a book/mag (don't dismiss the DSLR lover jazz mags as some techniques you can often transpalnt and adapt ) or by asking someones opion. try shooting action shots with a slower shuter speed, or cheat and turn and aperture number up My DSLR spend most of its life on aperture priority. I like low F number shots, it places the focus where you want it but it does fade out really fast away from the focal point. more recent open flash from my dslr at RRG09- absolutly pitch black with an old film lens. not even stars for light, all done (a bit overdone) with a old thyristor flash gun fired with the test button. and I don't use hardlay any image manipulation. for one, I don't know how to!

Some good advice here, and good shots too Mystery Machine - I see those handheld shots were taken with a 5Dmk2, you jammy jolly pain in the backside! I want! LOL - Bryn has been threatening to walk off with it a few times! I'm gradually persuading him to get one (nag him a little more each time I see him/speak to him) ;D ;D It's an AWESOME piece of kit and worth every penny. I've not used any of the HD video stuff...not fussed to have it and doubt I'll ever use it, but the camera does exactly what I bought it for - handling low light work without the need for a tripod. If Canon did a version without the video for £100 less then that's what I would have bought. I'm dying to get out and get some proper shots with it. Need to find some time and some willing volunteers with some cars.

Yeah I hear the low light stuff on the 5DII is amazing. Thing is if I buy one I can't tell the missus, she can't be told the cost. But also, I wouldn't mind spending the money on some new alloys. Damn, decisions huh!

Yeah I hear the low light stuff on the 5DII is amazing. Thing is if I buy one I can't tell the missus, she can't be told the cost. I was lucky..... I was on holiday with the GF in Pembrokeshire, walking along the coast getting some shots with my 450D which I'd had exactly a year ( some of the shots here) when I got chatting to another photographer on the coast path. He'd bought a 5DII and was singing its praises. He let me have a go with it and I was smitten! Seeing through that full frame was awesome! Everything had a better look to it and as for the feel/quality of the thing! When my GF saw the look on my face, she told me to treat myself to one. When I told her the cost, she said "you only live once" She's a great girl! One of my fave recent shots (taken just after Christmas...it was -2, my fingers were like ice, it was getting dark but the camera still grabs a good image!)

Yeah, I had the same feeling when I got my 40D (dimensionally the same as yours). It made the 400D I have previously feel like a cheap toy.

shot inside at techno classica essen, lighting conditions are terrible at these sort of events. rx7 at legends boucles de spa, good weather gives good lighting.. just shot on auto, from the hand.. chinese market downtown shanghai. Rainy night in a shanghai taxi highway shot... I've bought this Nikon more than a year ago and I'm still figuring out stuff and I'm still finding setting I didn't know existed.. lightning a couple of days ago, playing with the exposure setting I made this, couldn't get the tripod closer to the railing of my balcony unfortunately..

**thread resurrection**Well, I've got round to buying a camera at last. I've gone for a Fuji S5700: Fifty squid from eBay. Hopefully it'll arrive before the weekend so I can try it out at Goodwood... ;D

Bucking the trend a tad...... All of the photo's that you see each week come from three or four different cameras, Leo has a Sony, Chuck and Digital Rebel and I use a Canon G10 or 20D/40D depending on my mood. The best shots ? The ones that the guy behind the camera has lined up the best We never use photoshop, we get it right in the camera. For virtually every occasion outside of sports or formal portraits, I grab the G10.

I bought Flickr Pro subscription for £17 for the year. Unlimited uploads. Worth every penny. And if my friggin' camera phone didn't run out of juice, I'd be testing that bad boy's bandwidth 'till it hurt...
