Well, this thing was given to me some time ago and I have neither the time, money or mojo to do what it needs so I am passing it on. There were issues with the paperwork, but I have been assured that the signed papers are in the post to me today, so all will be well for a sale very soon.
I have it advertised locally for a few hundred euros ono to see if a local punter will take it. However, I am willing to offer this thing for free to any Retro Rider who isstupid brave enough to come and get it.
It has a 2.5 diesel engine and 4 speed manual box. Battery is flat but it starts with a jump and runs ok. Its a slow, noisy thing to drive, but seemingly good for plodding on at 50mph forever. I find it lacks power but I'm just not used to anything like this so its maybe normal?
Mechanically, it needs a lot - it failed the french MOT on only 1 thing - bottom arm bushes. however, the list of non fail faults (like advisories on a uk mot)is very long indeed and covers pretty much everything - poor brake efficiency, play in suspension and steering and various rust issues. Due to its age it doesnt need to pass emissions testing here.
Yes, its rusty. It has been brush-pained with red hammerite and there are plenty of clods of filler in it. it looks ok from a distance, but up close there are plenty of scabby areas I'm too scared to prod with a screwdriver for fear of making holes. The bottoms of a few of the doors are quite rotten. It has a tube-frame chassis which seems solid.
On the up-side, its an interesting looking thing that seems to share a lot of design and form in common with the Taunus Transit. Oldbus and Grizz have clearly shown that a modern engine swap into this sort of thing is feasible and useful.
Its surprisingly large - I can stand up in the back. The wooden frames are designed to take a normal double mattress, leaving room towards the front for other stuff. They are removable to increase load room when using as a van.
It comes with a few boxes of assorted spares. I havent looked through it all, but there is a good windscreen and seal, new cartridge oil filters, which are seemingly quite dear, and various other bits and bobs.
Its free. Now, I live in the ass-end of no-where, so expect a long journey. If anyone is serious about coming I can put you up for a couple of days if required, and if anyone is mad enough to fly here and drive back, I can collect from toulouse or carcassonne airports for a contribution to fuel costs. My location is half-way between the cities of Albi and Castres - google maps is your friend.
I will be honest with you - I have no interest at all in it, its just not my idea of a nice vehicle and is not something I have a use or need for, so I just want it gone. If it comes to it I will drive it to a scrappy and that will be the end of it, but I don't like wasting a rarer vehicle so if someone wants it they are welcome to have it. Be under no illusions though - it needs some serious work to become a reliable, usable truck. I suspect that once going, it would probably make it a large distance under its own steam, but a trailer collection would be a much smarter bet all round.
This is typical of the rust problems around the bodywork....
There is a board that bridges these wooden storage units, allowing a double mattress to lie flat. The units can lift out for load carrying....
Motive power....
