I've just been offered my old BMW 320i touring back in p/x against my Audi but I'm only selling my Audi due to economy so was wondering how much work would be involved in fitting a 2.5TDS engine out of E36 or a 525TDS? I'm assuming the engine fitting is fairly straight forward just not sure about fuel tank and wiring mainly, and anything else anyone may know that'll cause a nuisance here's the car in question

the 2.5 td isnt that economic, 30 mpg average iirc do you mean td or tds, because the tds is the one with more power and i never got as low as 30 from one, the td has less power and you've got to drive the off it to get anywhere, hence worse mpg. beany: An alternative for the conversion is the 1.7 litre 318tds engine, although they've only got 90hp and a kind of narrow power band i've always found them very good on diesel and have got 40+ mpg from them even chipped with the boost messed with. they respond well to a chip. Presumably if the UK system is anything like Ireland's setup then it's be cheaper for tax and insurance too. should be cheaper to source than the 2.5 too

An alternative for the conversion is the 1.7 litre 318tds engine, although they've only got 90hp and a kind of narrow power band i've always found them very good on diesel and have got 40+ mpg from them even chipped with the boost messed with. they respond well to a chip. Presumably if the UK system is anything like Ireland's setup then it's be cheaper for tax and insurance too. should be cheaper to source than the 2.5 too i did have a quick look at the 318tds but tax cost is the same as a 2.5 and i have motor trade insurance so that isn't a problem either and i've been looking around and you can get a 525tds for less than a 318tds complete so that way i know i have everything i should need. saying that i've never driven a 318tds so might be worth me driving one and seeing what its like in comparison

The 2.5 td/tds will mount like any M50 motor in an E30. As the cylinder head and intlet manifold are different you might not encounter the brake booster clearance issues as M5x swap get. The exhaust manifolds are different to so they may fit they may not.
Post on e30zone and after the usual torrent of "why do you want to do that" or "why put a diesel in an E30 that never got one" (such posters forget that there was an E30 324 d/td), you will actually get some decent help.
Low 20's from a 320i sound like there is something wrong with it. I get 30+mpg from a 2.7i equipped E28 (not an eta anymore but an eta block with a 325i top end, manifold and injection). When I drive to have fun I get high 20's.

yeah I've been on the zone a few times and just find so many people have an issue with what you're doing that it puts u off going on there. one of my mates was a moderator on there and he said the same and rarely goes on there any more. my mate did say the temp gauge rarely goes over cold so maybe the stats stuck open or been removed and the cars running constant cold start and chucking fuel in. Maybe I'll check that first and see how it goes before i make any real decisions cheers

stay the f*** away from 1.8 tds please!!! unreliable, they are useless and less spritely than a meastro derv with a 4108 perkins!! OK as an economical e36 but not worth transplanting IMO. the six pot 2.5 TDS is easier than an m50 as they sit upright like the m20 the hard part is the fly by wire injection pump, I haven't managed to get my head around it yet. but other than that its pretty easy. you'd need a 525 e34 motor or sump and pick up as e36s have a rear bowl sump. and go pre 1995 if you can to avoid troublesome EWS issues.

cheers Edd, so do you reckon the fly by wire would just be a case of fitting the pedal with the sensor on or is it more involved than that?

I'm sure it can be done. I just don't know what wires from the engine loom pick up the potentiometer feeds from the pedal. maybe an omega wiring schematic might be more available? as the only normal diags are the ones in the american bentley manuals and they didn't get the E34 diesel.

ok cool, will look into it, i'm guessing the engine mounts, sump, gearbox and loom are different on omega's as i know where there's one layed up that could be cheap

Some new bodieand doyle thanks for the info.
The M20 has a couple of coolant temperature sensor wires. The single spade one does the temp guage, replace that is the needle does not move above cold. The blue twin spade connector is the coolant temp sensor that tells the ECU what the engine temperature is. If that sesnor (an NTC) is faulty then change it. When cold (21 celcius) the resistance should be 2200-2700 ohms, when the engine is at perating temperature resistance should be 300-360 ohms. If its a bit out don't worry but it needs to function as an NTC.

Bloke round the corner from me had a, E30 324TD for a few years, LHD it was, i know they are rare but finding out about em might help with retro fitting a TD in an E30

Far too many belittle that engine, the only time they give trouble is when they're driven the ring out of by people and not maintained. I've got one now with 189,000 (approximately, correct figure is slightly more) on it, not had an easy life but i've kept it well maintained and it's goin like clockwork! last one was big miles too and it's still around with a different owner, last i saw it there was over 200k racked up. the maestro comparison is ridiculous man, i wont even get into that.

Tax system you guys have is obviously far different from ours here. the 1.7 is €471 per year and the 2.5 is €935. insurance on a normal policy for the 2.5 would be about double the price for the 1.7 too.

I hear you on the rip off tax system over here.
What chip would you recommend for the 318tds? I just bought one recently and it's economical (47mpg) but god it's dead. A lot of people say that chipping them only brings trouble???

47 mpg leave it like that. Whats the point in trying to liven it up. How much difference will it really make and if you use the extra power you won't get 47mpg.

Would say that it's not really worth doing if you're only looking for fuel economy - LPG will give you more gains with much less hassle!

lpg doesnt give you mpg really, it gives you cheap fuel. similar but different way of doing it. the advantage of a diesel is the torque

How much difference will it really make and if you use the extra power you won't get 47mpg. other one was chipped, and had the boost increased, still got over 40 average, even though i drove the ring out of it half the time Even with just a chip you're looking at about 110-115 bhp as opposed to 90 and similar mpg if you drive it the same, it's just less effort for it to do the same job, and a bit more pace when you want it
