I've been quite fortunate, as none of my cars have done anything untowards whilst I've been driving them. My wife however, in the Cinquecento noticed that all the dash lights had come on and "smoke" was filling the cabin. She got out and tried to lift the bonnet, at the exact same time as the header tank exploded. ![](http://www.fiatforum.com/gallery/data/500/picture10.jpg)

The original (skinny) drum brakes on the 105E decided they didn't want to play with the quick 1300 x-flow motor - loosing brakes in town when heading for a busy junction is NOT fun ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) BX stalled one night on way home. Pulled over checked everything and it seemed ok. Next day on 150 mile run home it did it again ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) My advice? Don't risk driving a BX in the fast lane of the M1 on a Friday night if you think the engine has gremlins - you loose brakes, steering, suspension, and get dead motor at 70 mph ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

Had a Mk2 Cav back in the '80's which had the habit of locking the rear wheels with no warning when braking - did it coming down a hill near Bath at fast speed, Missus doing her slap in the passenger seat, me looking out the passenger side window at the car and caravan coming up the hill and after I'd gathered it all together and got my butt to stop chewing the seat pad, all she could say was "This lipstick doesn't suit me, does it.....?"... ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Had a set of new brake pads disintegrate a day after I fitted them... My old Marina Special had a good trick of turning its headlights out, usually when thacking down a country lane in the pitch black..... Snapped a halfshaft on one of my estates (more embarrassing than anything...) Parked a Montego sideways across the A14 by the Orwell bridge trying to avoid a bloody JCB in the rush hour......

i once had a Lotus Eclat, the scariest thing that ever did was start on a cold morning once without me needing to open the bonnet. It scared the life out of me!

My current car is quite well behaved. Previous cars have done their utmost to kill me. The single worst was a Holden Ute. The steering column fell in my lap. Whilst driving. At 70km/h. Through a corner. Bad ute. The exhaust fell off from the manifold and the whole thing did a hugely scary pole vaulting thing before it bent around the rear axle in a shower of sparks. The engine shot the number 5 cylinder through the head one morning when starting it. Horrible mess that was. The rear suspension bushes collapsed on a semi regular basis giving you that feeling of never quite knowing when the back end might spear off into the unknown. It was an awful, awful piece of engineering. Also the stereo, all of its own, with no warning at all, silently slid backwards into the dash before the sound stopped. I traded it in the very next day. We have a winner! what sorta Holden ute was it?

My old Marina Special had a good trick of turning its headlights out, usually when thacking down a country lane in the pitch black..... . I'd forgotten that trick! the amazon tries that on me on occasion. I think it's high-beam related, I turn off high beam with the foot switch and all of a sudden have no headlights ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) . Current fix is to get out and jiggle the plug/joint in the engine bay until they work again. probably should get that sorted properly...

Reading all the propshaft issues, reminds me of my father in law's problems.
He's had a new propshaft fitted to his 172k freelander, and that set off a horrible vibration. The garage in Chesterfield said it was the viscous coupling, so that was replaced. Still the vibration remained. One day, whilst on the motorway the Propshaft fell off, managed to retrieve it from the motorway and went back to the Garage in chesterfield.
Conversation went like this :
Garage Owner : I don't think we can be bothered dealing with your minor vibration issues Mr *******, the car has too many miles on it. FiL: I don't see how the prop shaft falling off is a minor issue. GO: I do. FiL : How do you work that one out? GO: Because your an idiot Mr *******. Go away.

Remembered another couple of scary moments.
Was in a mates Pro Street Cortina going over the M62 in rush hour. It was peeing down and due to the 6" roof chop we couldn't see a thing. Trundling along at about 45mph my mate nudged the throttle to go round a wagon and we piroetted and sat there facing the wrong way in the middle lane. Eventually we got onto the hard shoulder in reverse but the police had to form a rolling road block to let us turn round.
Also was going to the Leeds Cruise from York dragstrip one weekend. Due to being half cut I jumped into a V8 Mk1 Zephyr. We were the last car in the convoy on the way home (in the dark). All of a sudden the lights flickered then cut out, then the dashboard set on fire. We got that out, but then had to drive 30 miles with no lights through pitch black country lanes. Didn't go slowly either lol.

Scariest moment I had was when i had my bug and smelling burning rubber though some inconsiderate person was burning tyres tuned out it was me. The battery had caught fire under the back seat and was boiling the battery acid.
Also not really retro but still bad news. Was in my old daily hack Mondeo Diesel on the M62 overtaking a truck in the fast lane when i got sudden nose drop, lack of power, engine warning light and limp home mode. Which at about 80 was brown trousers time with cars coming up behind me fast and me not being able to get out of the way. Wasn't the first or last time it did that. Safe to say didn't have that car long ;-)

Mine's so far missed scary... the worst thing the mini's done to date to warrant new underwear is to have the clutch slave cylinder give out.... on the local bypass.... got to the rounderbout at the end, whnt to down shift and... grrrriiiiinnnnddd.... was a bit of a oh sh1t moment!!! More the shock than anything.
The isuzu pickup had a great habit.... wet road, 2.8ltr diesel, rear wheel drive, no load, commercial tyres.... you can see what is coming... yep!! It had a great desire to swap direction in bends on greasy or wet roads!!! Was terrified the first time.... got used to fine trottle control after that... and catching it when it tried....

The door on the 1602 opened while hard cornering. Change gear and then slam the door shut. Other then that I've had a few lock ups in the wet and under steer in the Galant. Damn front wheel drive trying to kill me.
Cheers
