Ive got a few new SA gear cables. There 2 metre long. Got the barrel nipple for twist grips and the rod nipple for triggers. Cut of the one you don't need, IE barrel. Theres and adjustable cable clamp with the tube that screws onto the rod thats goes into the hub. I got ten of those cables in a Halfords sale. got 8 left. Think it should be under £2 to post them to you. Also got a few twist grips and cables. Different size cogs. The spacers and spring retainers. And some of the rods that goes in the axle.
If the hubs oiled and has no cable attached but still no drive. It maybe that the insides are gummed up or rusted. Theres 4 diamond shaped pawls. 2 on each end of the insides. They can stick down. And the tiny springs can weaken or break. might try putting some parrafin inside to break up the muck in there. Or try taking it to bits and lubing it.

This page is useful for adjusting the cables on a 3-speed Sturmey hub: sheldonbrown.com/english-3.htmlAs sugegsted, if the pedals are 'freewheeling' forward whatever the cable position (try holding the trigger between gears and pedalling to see if the adjustement is the problem) then the pawls could be stuck. WD40 or similar could be used to free them off - but you'll have to re-lube as soon as it's freed off with heavier oil to protect the bearing surfaces.

Is the hub engaging any gears of does it slip? If it slips then the chances are the hub need stripping and new pawl springs installed

Thanks for all the replies guys, i had a look at some old instructions off the web and managed to buy a gear cable from my local bike shop. Fitted that on saturday and having soaked the hub in oil for a few days i got it engaging gears!! Still needs setting up a bit as i have low gear, neutral and high gear but no 2nd. I bought 2 new tyres and tubes and have been out and about on it all weekend!! Havent even touched the brakes, as the rust on the rims slows you down plenty at the mo! I want to find out the date of this bike. The rear wheel has been replaced with a 1968 model. The front wheel is 1963 so i guess its from then, but some of the parts make me think its a little older. Can anyone shed any light? Put a basket on the ladies bike, looks the part now. Will get some pics up shortly. Joe

looks like youve got Altenburger brake calipers...which arent brilliant. If it was weimman brakes, it would have a date stamped on the back of them. There might be a date stamped on the insides of the front lamp. Or on the handlebar stem quill.

Cheers, ill have a look later on when I'm home and see what i can find! Quick pic of my bike outside the chippy on Saturday. Mooched around on it with mates drinking beers in the lovely sun, with my lights flickering away as I rode. Pretty awesome. Later on my girlfriend came over so we nipped to the shop for yet more beer, putting her new basket on the President to good use Joe
