Oh and I forgot to mention I'm not a hippy, could that be a problem? I checked that link, I might have underestimated that some do live in trucks. But honestly, I wouldn't be able to live in theirs, as I would in yours. No pop-outs, and small living areas... I'll keep looking in case I find good solutions

Cheers- yeah pop by one day for a cuppa!
Froggy. You don't have to be a hippy at all. You just need to learn to live with out so much junk (or find somewhere else to store junk) Having a interest in modifying old cars makes it trickier as I need all the associated tools. Pop outs would be easy to add to any truck with a decent solid box on the back. We are now making a small workshop shed at my brothers house to work from. I'll put a photo up on a shed thread if there is one? Its looking pretty rustic....
If wish the UK would have more like this. I see no real reason why not apart from the stigma attached to travellers etc. But travellers don't live in housetrucks- they live in yucky plastic boxes.

We have now got Nerdnet access. Powerful wifi signal from the campground opening a nerdnet room and we can pick it up from inside the truck. Its cheap too.
sweet!!!!
Even better today as its raining cats and kittens outside so what better than to crank up the kettle and surf.

the whole idea of a housetruck is so damn appealing. over here there's little more than $100k USD motor homes driven by retirees, the occasional rental RV driven by a stressed out dad, and toy haulers (5th wheels with motorcycles'cars in the back).
i'd love to just mosey down the road and park somewhere even half as beautiful as the areas you've photo'd your housetruck. absolutely brilliant... just love it!

Awesome build! Me and my other half just breefly went though the whole thing! Didn't think it would be her kind of thing but she loves the idea!
We both have HGV's and where we work they sell off some wagons ever year, 24ton Volvo's!
Although i think if we were gonna do that we'd have to do it in a country like yours, then we'd need to re-take our tests! lol

Long time lurker here,
I've spent a good few hours today reading this thread from start to finish and it is inspirational. It really is. I must confess I've had all sorts of ideas today about engaging in a similar lifestyle choice but the reality is at the moment I'll be a slave to the rat race for the forseeable.
Really many thanks for posting your project. Even the missus loves it and she usually just leaves me to it when I'm surfing through forums etc.

I agree with what v8will said. Reading your thread makes a dude contemplate banging a few planks together and hitting the road.
I wish you loads of fun on your adventures!

Just read this thread through from start to finish and am now late for dinner. However, got to say that this is an awesome build as has already been said, top job, you have ended up with a great house. V. jealous! Wish I had the skills/time/testicular fortitude to come up with something this cool. And the setting for it is amazing too, only been once but loved it. Keep up the posts! BTW commiserations for Kitty 1, hope you get to settle down soon and bring Morris home.

I'd like to know a bit about your life on the road though, do you have enough savings for it to be like a vacation, or do you get jobs when you get stationed somewhere? Very interested

Hey guys- I love it when I read replies like "this has been a great inspiration for me to have a go at building something like your truck" etc One of the reasons I wanted to start a thread on this build was because unless you have lived in NZ or the US back in the day most people will have never seen a housetruck in this sort of style. They are a fairly coomon thing in NZ and what's cooler is that people are still building them here and there. I have just spotted a new housetruck I have not seen before locally while I was out on a mtb ride. I will go back and get some photos because it was really funky. The question of work. Well 5 weeks ago I started working at a local bikeshop. Just 3 days a week which suits me plus I can now get cheap bike parts again (after having spent 10 years in Oxford as a bike mechanic and then leaving its been a shock to pay full retail...) Hannah has a part time job too. We'll just take it as it comes for now but have almost finished building a little workshop at my brothers here in Nelson. There we will begin doing all sorts of things from building woodstoves, bike trailers, gates, bike racks, welding cars etc. Anything really. I we find a demand we'll fill it. This will allow us to work for ourselves and not answer to anyone else. If its hot and sunny we'll take a break in the middle of the day and go for a bike ride or a run ;D ON the cat front we have actually acquired a cat on loan His name is Henry and his owners have moved away and will take him back when they have finalised buying a house. Henry is so cute. He was hit by a car 3 months ago and lost a leg. But you would know as he gets around so well. He has well and truly taken over the house and settled in nicely... Its been very nice to have a cat around. Cats complete a house! We also had some visitors a week or so ago... Sheepers and Snoozin came by for a couple of nights. They were finishing up a big road trip where Snoozin had bought a old Datsun 260c way down south. After having done the right thing and taken them out for a good spin in my Viva we spent the next two evenings chatting cars, cats, sausages, cider and more cars. Very nice guys both of them. You will most likely recognise Sheepers awesome car which made me squeal like a little girl- its so brutal. I love the V8 sound and his lexus V8 sounds even better than most. See here......
