and what can be done to tune/modify them.
I guess for using a modern engine you would be looking at a "Red Top" or VX/Opel twincam, or for the classic engine, a Blydenstein build and tune up.
What about brakes/handling?
And how rare are they?
Quite fancy the thought of crusing along in an FD/FE Ventora until I could afford to tune it, or stick something like a Carlton/Senator/Royale lump in tuned up.
give it electric windows and central locking and it would be pretty pimp on airbags.
Tinted windows and a carPC would make it totally freaky if the outside looked 70's pimp, but the inside looked all black and leather and carbon and stainless.
Any suggestions where you would find any FD/FE in running order with tax and ticket and minimal rot.

Would prefer saloon to estate. That estate is missing the essential ticket tooo.
I've seen the other one (the Saloon) looks very nice too have to admit.

If you are gonna stick a Carlton/Senator lump in one Buy late model cat equiped engine C3.0 NE - without the cats they are happy on unleaded and 195 bhp out of the box!!! 24V's only push 204 bhp (although you can get 250 bhp out of one) PS it's a secret so don't tell everyone ;D

I was thinking the 3.0 six might be a better more modern swap for the original. Of course it would have to be megasquirted, seeing as it would be injection anyway (the new engine) and squirts like GM sensors, and like you say, could then run unleaded.

Pop over to Bangalore and pick up a brand new one..... Bin off all the Hindustan bits and lash on a load of lovely Luton trim

Oh wow, wonder what it would cost to import, I guess it would need to pass SVA, if it is considered a brand new car, wouldn't it need to meet CAT level emissions?

Why mega squirt an engine that already has a competant engine management system? Guy local to me has a complete late 12V with auto tranny and all wiring and ecu's etc still connected and on the engine £100 from memory and that would almost be plug and play!!

I've had about 18 FDs. I lose count. I'm working on a Ventora at the moment. They are getting very rare. When Vauxhall looked at putting the Opel derived straight six (Senator engine) into them they lengthened the nose of the car by about 4" or 5" to accomodate it. I have seen the prototype, its still around somewhere. The stock staright six can be improved with head work, tripple webbers and a custom ground cam but its expensive and IMO that engine is a complete POS. As stock its restricted to hell. With tuning it improves but there are beter engines out there. It also weighs an absolute ton. I have found the Chevrolet small block V8 is a good one. I had an FD with a moderately tuned 350 small block and it was an animal. With stock Ventora springs the front end had taller ride height with the 5.7 V8 than withthe 3.3 straight six and yes, it feels heavier with the six as well. understeer city. Rover V8s are a popular fitment as well. Good swap as it reduces nose weight.
Whatever you do get a solid one with nothing missing as parts are now getting very hard to find. There are three owners clubs for the FD and two for the FE. All of whom seem to be at war with each other.
I have tons of FD parts accumulated through 15 years of playing with these cars so give me a shout if you need stuff as I guess I have more than I need...
Both FD and FE are prone to rot in the inner wings, mainly where the hinges pass through but also behind the headlamps. Door bottoms, wheel arches and sill are the next ones and the spare wheel tray in the FD is notorious.
Slant 4 engines in the Victor version are torquey, but RPM limmited. Decent head, Stombergs and a 4 branch help but the best option is a Lotus twin cam (as used in the chevette HSR and Firenza) if you can find one.
Other than that, stick a V8 in it.
If you put a Rover V8 in a Ventora you will need to use Victor springs. If you put a V8 in a Victor you will need a Ventora rear axle to take the torque. Reliant Scimitar axles are easier to find and fit pretty nice, but are the wrong stud pattern.
Also beware these cars are 4" PCD studs not 100mm and although 100mm wheels will go on the studs are stressed by this and can snap or pull out of the back plate, or just bend so the wheel won't come off! Not good, been there!

here's mine anyway. Here it is in 1992 when I first had it and it was my daily driver. here she is in the garage at the old house, early last year when work finally started to pick up pace on the old girl This is a common rust point onm an FD as well. Its the mount for the rear seat belts (where fitted) but its still an MOT fial if you don't have the belts in... I don't think I'll baremetal the whole car, just the lower half. This is how the spare wheel tray goes much welding later... Getting there (very) slowly...

Ah, should have said that kudos goes to Kev for the welding... My welding is not quite that neat. My metal forming is also not quite "all that" either.
I had it farmed out as I moved house last summer, car was in bits so it went over to a mates place and his mate did the welding while I was moving house. Supposed to keep the project momentum going. Unfortunately it got stored outside for 3 months so the roof and other bits I'd bare metalled and primed all need doing again now...

FD or FE? '72 is the changeover year. I had a '72 FD Estate which was registered 5 months after the FE was launched!

If anyone buys it, I have a spare tailgate, load bay side glass, some other estate-only hardware and other stuff I will sell quite reasonably. I'd be tempted myself if I wasn't neck deep in projects. Heres one of my old ones.
