Going sand racing come the weekend on my road iron ;D Consists of a oval track on the beach in Mablethorpe, super fast on the straight and speedway styley in the corners (yet to be tested ). Signing on is at 8 am on Sunday and it's £40. Thats all I know, need to check the reg's out really. So, have a trusty rusty CB500 and some knobblies, surely that's all is needed, right? Anyway, here's a pic. More pics to come later and more info when I find out *grammer/spelins edit*

Good luck to you! Never seen a CB5 look *quite* like that before!! No front brake needed? Or is that on the 'to do' list?

Good luck to you! Never seen a CB5 look *quite* like that before!! No front brake needed? Or is that on the 'to do' list? Any weight transfer to the front is normally pretty terminal in sand, so no front brake required. Helps me out too as it saves lining it all up and it's one bit that won't get broken as I need to ride to work on this monday morning. I'm thinking gas gas gas, back off (just a little) turn in, gas gas heroic shower of sand roost and op lock action then gas gas gas. Easy, gulp. I've rode in sand before on my mx bikes so have a little understanding but this flat track thing is new to me and the converted cb is an unknown quntity. It's gonna be interesting for sure, I'm looking forward to it. So, the bike. Standard ish cb500 bought 3 or 4 years back as a stop gap bike that might have done me a couple of months before dying. Seems £500 buys alot of Honda as it just goes on and on, 95 thousand miles to date. Mods are as ever of a ghetto style with all borrowed parts which were to hand at the time of conception, so big thanks to all who have lent me stuff unwittingly you know you would if asked have said yes anyway ;D 17' knobber for on the back cb hoop. Note valve poking out through the drilled sidewall to stop it getting beheaded when the mighty ponies are unleashed. First effort for the front was this kx80 19' wheel which fitted snug under the orginal mudgaurd but spacer/spindle issue's put paid to that. So next bike to get plundered was a crf which kindly donated it's 21' which may well be better for stabibiliity in the corners and add a little ground clearance. Or may just lock dead on the headers before reaching the first corner as clearance there is tight. Ho hum fingers crossed. It passed the ratchett strap test and so did the fork seals, which was nice. Front brake removed for safety reasons and clutch swaped with an old one as any sticky out bits could well 'get it' on the day. Managed to get the throttle cable streched onto some wide steel bars although I'm sure I have a set of renthals kicking around somewhere for that pro look. Looking at it, I think I'll remove the clock and lamp as they are the only vunrable bits that I don't have on the spares bike. Thanks for all the comments, wish me luck.

Will you nutter!!! Looks like a beast!! Cheers, I'm kinda liking the survival look with knobblies, needs some more matt black though methinks. Never added a link before so unsure if this works. www.xtreme-action-images.com/sandrace/classes.htmlLooks like I'm gonna need a lanyard kill switch but otherwise pretty relaxed regs. My only worry is that money is tight so we gonna kip in the transit, brghhhh. Still, good mate and whiskey for company

are you fit? you gonna sweat like a pig throwing that heavy bike around make sure to clean it really really well after wards the sand will get into everything, ruining wheel bearings, chains, brakes and pivot points in short time, engine in even shorter time if your air filter/ air box isn't up to scratch 95k miles is good I've had my cbr6 up to 70k before I gave up

Riding dirt bikes has kept me kinda fit and my knackered 250 smoker bought new in 02 is testament to the perils of of road abuse. Done many events at weavers down and slab common where the sand eats pads in a matter of hours and of course the aforementioned bearing/drive chain/engine. I have a spare CB which will donate it's goodies to keep this one functioning as a road bike which helps alot. Will take your advice on a good wash after, normally it only gets washed when it rains but I think I might treat it and asses the damage after the weekend to see what can be done to improve and prevent sand ingress. One big benefit of the CB is the lack of suspension linkage which has become a costly affair on my enduro bike

Aye, spares bike is a godsend. Have fun on the 6 TR. Been looking for a good excuse to get a pair of hagons on the cb for a while as the 2 pairs of showas I've got are pure comedy, especially 2 up. Inner tubes sound a good un though, seem to have left prep a bit late as ever

I had a similar idea a few years ago...........using a Honda CX500 v-twin ;D But i realised early that with all the weight high up it was gonna be just too heavy and difficult to control on sand/dirt so have gone back to rebuilding it as a road bike, all be it a slightly breathed on one Looking good chap, look forward to hearing how you get on. Steve Now that is crazy ;D cx's seemed to have slipped into the cherished/restored end of ownership after years of ridicule and abuse, both verbal and physical in the hands of couriers. Talking of which the cb is ex dispatch, hence the mileage. Didn't they do a turbo cx? Start a thread Steve, get some pics up there seems to be lot's of bike love on here. Anyway here is the end most the competition will see and my favorite angle Lanyard kill switch purchased today at a whopping £11.99 so thats the total build cost thus far. Fingers crossed will get the final bits done tomorrow and then sort out my pals Cagiva 350 and we're ready to go

That's superb. I'd like to make a road bike-based 'scrambler'. How did you get on?
There used to be a lot of sand racing at Southport in the olden days, but it is now long gone.
