Is the Renner really that large as compared with the Saab tow vehi? Or is that parallax optical illusion? It looks huge in that rear quarter shot. The 14 is basically the Renault 5's bigger, more grown up brother, it competed (or tried to) with the VW Golf & Ford Escort. So yes it's definitely smaller than the Saab 900, maybe not half the size but more like the size of a 99. The Saab will be longer & a touch wider too. I think the odd proportions of the 14 mean that it can sometimes appear bigger than it actually is. Sometimes it seems quite large & other times it appears quite dinky depending on what it's parked next to. But this illusion Renault have created with the 14 shell means it compares very favourably for interior space & practicality within it's class! It's a shame people couldn't see past it's gawky looks & then it might have been more of a success as it was a much more decent car than it was ever given credit for. Saying that, they did make just under a million of them, although their target was 2.5 mil (all rusted away it seems)

So just the sad old P5 left now then - anything due to happen with it or it is just getting hiabed?? Really love the Carlton, I corrected a genuine Vauxhall / Opel fanatic who insisted there was no such thing as an E1 Carlton estate but I knew full well there was, this isn't the first one I've seen!

Bad times. Left at 4-00, just got home. My trailer went ka-bam on an island and lost a wheel So I've got to fetch it from the other side of brum =/ Argh. Still, lovely people I have met today.

Oh curse word thats not good, hope you got it recovered ok? to be fair it did do well considerin it had an engine and box, rear axle and I'm guessin the 4 doors in it too?
The rover is availible to anyone whos interested but be quick,we had a look round it and i opened the doors and had a good stamp around in there and theres no give at all so floors and boot floor are still solid,to look at it seems most of the rot is confined to the exterior but i wouldnt like to be 100% as i don't know anything about these.

The old rovers rot superbly well, though the earlier they are the better the steel, so this being a very early one will be built out of superb quality steel..
They are unbelievably strong and very well built esp compared to that cereal box consul that's why the banger racers (grrrrrrrrrrr) the battering ram shaped front subframe helped as well, loved them as even when rotted to bits they'd still go round an oval (just about) that one is probably still quite solid overall but probably still well beyond saving, if it's going to be binned I'd like some bits off it but it's just not worth me dragging the trailer up to the cotswolds to get it as it'd just sit and fester in my yard...

Is it just me or is that a metal folder in front of it? Yup, it is indeed. In other news: All Consul bits arrived here, after much delay Consul, metal folder and pre-historic welder are off to scrap this weekend Rover purchased by justanotherhigh. Possibly foolishly, but I refused to let them cube it with the other stuff, it's too good for that. Heh. ;D

you got the rover? did it come out easily? Purchased, not removed ;D I came down for the last few Consul bits as I was in the area, had a good look at the Rover and made a quick decision. With some determination it should be good, just a shame it's an auto! Edit: should get it out in a week or two, with determination and a few mates - will be in touch if you're around!

I think the front tyres still have air in, they've just sunken into the turf ;D I did consider bringing some wheels down and A-framing it back, but then my brain turned on. 1.5 tonnes of unbraked Rover behind my poor Carlton? Bignut will sort it, I imagine, providing we can extract it without burning out my already rather fragile clutch. Fun fun, eh?

Don't drag it out with anything south of the back axle as the rear legs dissolve on these.....
also only do a straight back pull on the rear axle as they are rubber mounted at the rear and if you give them a good tug with some sideways force on it they'll split right off, ask me how i know...
Well done for saving it, mk1's are very rare now, i have loads of P5 bits if you need anything particular..

I did toy with the idea of having a play and trying to drag it out the other week, thought itd be best to jack the front up out of the ground 1st but then when i looked underneath the rear there didnt seem to be much that looked good enough to tow from......

I don't think finding a good place to pull from is a problem... the problem as I see, is the handbrake lever is fully 'out' as I imagine it has been for the last thirty years or so... I'm hoping a good tug will see it off, but it might be tricky.
