Hi All, Well, after spending about 3 years reading up, tinkering and generally working out how K-jet fuel injection works I have gone and bought myself a car with good old fashioned twin carbs - back to square one! Bascially it's a Mk1 Golf 1500cc with twin Dellorto 40's on it. I can get it running ok from cold but only by putting my hands over the trumpets (is that what they're called) to restrict the air a bit and act like a choke. There is no manual or auto choke fitted so cold running is a bit rough, and pretty rich by the smell of it. This is a pic of the carbs: Am I right in thinking if I make a little linkage to connect up the two spring loaded levers in the top middle of each carb to each other, and then hook that up to a cable I will have a manual choke mechanism? I have worked out how to lower the idle speed so far and it runs good when warm but my knowledge of carbs is pretty basic. Anyone got any tips or good links for info? I know some people don't bother with the cold start mechanism and just pump the throttle a bit before starting but I'd like to get it all set up properly and make use of the choke for cold starts if it's possible. Much appreciated. Incidentally, the noise they make is far better than K-jet! Stu

I thought about this when i got my Weber 45. but I don't use the car often so i just let her tick over on her own on the drive for a while before use. your idea sounds good and easy enough

From memory that is the choke mech, havnt played with twin webers for a while but think that is it, you gotta love the sound of those bad boys, and yes calling them trumpets is the right term., for changing mixture on these bad boys you need different jets for, idle, main , emulsion tubes, accel? and you can even change the venturi size, a very tunable carb WEST

Hi My 104ZS has twin dellortos and a fully functional manual choke. If you want I can take some pictures of the linkage and attachment details for you to copy. It will be this evening though as the cars at home. It works very well. car has never failed to start no matter how cold/long its left. Here's a bad pic to be going on with basically that's the choke cable running across the top. The throttle linkage is between the carbs

104ZS - more pics would be very helpful but even from that pic I can see how the choke cable works. I take it you just set it up so when the two choke levers are fully sprung back the choke knob is pushed right in against it's stop on the dash?
Do you need a choke knob that you can turn to lock in position as presumably otherwise the return springs on the carbs will keep springing back?
Thanks for the info so far everyone. I feel like I have really got into 'retro' motoring buying a car with dirty great carbs on it! ;D

Yes, what you said. I fitted a choke knob under the dash. Luckily older 104s had a manual choke so it went there. It turns and locks into position. easy peasy
Will take a few pics theis evening
You'll love the noise. Great gobs of induction roar. Sounds much better than just lobbing a 36" back box on a la Paxo stylee! Get them set up properly and they sound great at full chat as they rasp and blow, just like an old style rally car.
The bonkers thing about my set up is that for no apparent reason Peugeot cast the manifold flanges upside down so if you bolt the carbs straight on they'd be the wrong way up, so the vibration damping rubbers reverse the mounting to bring the carbs the right way up, which means you can't use off the shelf rubbers and you can't get the Pug ones any more!!

The k-jet system was the worst thing about my old manta gte.Nothing but trouble with it. If i'dve kept it,carbs would've been thrown on for definate. Give me carbs any day.

as for carbs being better................yes, i agree, on a nice warm sunny day, and your rich enough to pay for the fuel to boot. my 1.6 crossflow (86 horses) averages 15-20 mpg round town, and in the single figures if i boot it ;D ;D, and days like today the carb freezes over to make being stuck in traffic a rather pleasant experience indeed. I'm going for some bosch l-jetronic on the pinto I'm putting in

I agree with SeventyNine, carbs are good for weekend cars but I will be sticking with K-jet on my everyday Golf. It does about 30 - 35mpg however you drive it, starts warm or cold and goes pretty well (Audi 2L 16v engine), sounds alright but not quite as good as the Mk1 on carbs obviously.

How is the mk1 with fuel economy, a mate has a 1500 Automatic Jetta which does about 15 mpg tops because of the autobox. And with yours having carbs as well....

Ste - Don't know yet as it's not roadworthy yet but from what you've said I expect it'll be a little thirsty! On the plus side though, it sounds like a big yank V8 or something when you rev it! ;D I would hope for something like mid 20's mpg when it's properly set up... if not I'm going to have to fit original style skinny wheels to reduce drag...!

Don't worry, not about to change anything unless the car is hideously un-economical! ;D

104zs - That's brilliant, thanks so much for the pics - I will do mine just the same. I have found a manual choke cable in a box of bits at my Dad's, it's off a Bedford CF I think but it's long enough so should do the job. I've routed it through the bulkhead and just left it hanging under the dash for now, not connected to the carbs yet either, will sort it soon though.

Yup, that's exactly the same way the 'enrichment' thingies are set up on my engine. Don't want to be a killjoy here, but are you guys running without filters all the time?
