Has anyone done it? Any ideas roughly on prices -getting there, laps etc? Thought I'd ask first before googling it, in case any members had advice based on actually going... In the meantime, have a pic of what I would love to take, but probably won't be able to justify...

Laps are now up to about 20 euros. They are tearing the out of it a bit over there now. It seems to be becoming a bit of a tourist hole, and the restaurants and such around it are jumping on it. Still, i will be back, just gonna take a packed lunch...

I've been a couple of times, and loved it 1st time was in a convoy of 3 Minis & the 2nd was just me and a mate in my prelude. Camped the 1st time, and stayed in Adenau the 2nd. The gokarting/museum used to be awesome, but they tore it all down by the time I went back, dunno if they have rebuilt it. oh yeah, don't crash, it can be quite pricey.... Some pics of my trips: Not really what you want to see \/ Like I said... don't crash...

They are trying to make it into EuroDisney-On-Wheels. You must exchange your euros for RingCash scrip on a debit card. You cannot buy beer, popsicles, or a hat with cash on track property. There is now a rollercoaster. (See, I said Disney and wasn't kidding.) The laps are 'spensive, and you're absolutely screwed if you crash. You will get a ticket, and you will get a giant repair bill for the Armco and emerg vehicle response. It is considered a public road on non-race days, so it will be the Polizei who you have to deal with. And they're not impressed by any car you may have or any sob story. They scrape up bodies every day and haul broken Ferraris and Pooches off with regularity, so they won't be impressed.
Expensive to play at Bernie's Ring. Places to stay nearby are expensive. The cops aren't playin'.
Other than that, it's a flipping blast! Highly recommended!

As Norm said, its getting a bit touristy, we went a couple of years ago for €19/lap, we didn't stay in the area as we were just passing through on the way back home. Have a look round the musuem (it was back up and looked quite new in 2007) and shop at the GP track, well worth a few hours there. ;D

That all sounds a bit rubbish, I was never keen on the whole thing to be honest, but the idea of it being some pricey tourist trap sounds like a real nightmare! Suppose if you're really into the mystique and history of the place it might be worth it though.

If anyone would care to offer some viable alternatives, i.e. somewhere I can drive my own uninspected car flat out round a fun/complex track for 13 miles for €19 in Northern Europe - it'd be much appreciated.
Not a fan of the whole tourist trap thing myself either, but as far as I know we're pretty limited in our choices ain't we?

Do it, it's amazing - terrifying, but in a very good way! /\/\ That's me driving, that is. You can save a few pennies by camping here - www.camping-am-nuerburgring.de/You can get Eurotunnel crossings for about £50, or ferry crossings from £20 if you book early enough. Take a load of Euros with you (firstly for tolls, secondly in case you get pulled over and fined...) It's been said before, but I'll say it again - don't crash! It'll cost you a bloody fortune - you need to pay for recovery, for the gravel you displace, they charge for the Armco you hit by the metre and in some places there are three or four layers of Armco... just don't do it. And if you haven't driven it before, it's very useful to have someone else in the car with you to act as a spotter for overtakers. Don't forget your European breakdown cover for the drive there/back. (Although, of course, this won't cover you on the 'Ring, and neither will your insurance!) There are certain other things that are required for driving in some European countries too - warning triangle, beam deflectors, spare bulb set, high-vis jacket, first aid kit etc... all little things, but build them into the budget for your trip. It'll be an unforgettable experience, you'll love it. ;D

I really quite fancied a 'ring trip at some point, as tri says, what other options are there? There is a reason that its so popular afterall.

what other options are there? Spa - www.spa-francorchamps.be/en07/home/index.phpValencia - www.circuitvalencia.com/Le Mans (Bugatti circuit) - www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Le_Mans_Bugatti...etc. Driving the 'Ring is just a very cool track day, and you can do track days pretty much anywhere. The reason that the Nurburgring is such a legend is that it's so enormously long, with such a wide variety of corners, crests, cambers etc, plus it's pretty narrow in places so you feel like a god when you overtake. ***edit*** Sorry, I've just re-read your post and realised that I totally misinterpreted what you were saying. Apologies, I wasn't trying to be patronising! Yes, I agree, the 'Ring is a unique experience and there really isn't anywhere else like it.

If you treat it like a trackday you'll be pretty disappointed and you'll probably end up in the barriers. You need to have hundreds of laps under your belt to be able to drive it anywhere near quickly, and you'll still spend the entire time half looking in the rear view mirror for the locals in their diesel golfs Also, don't expect to do more than 3-4 laps a day realistically on a weekend. As a motoring holiday it makes great sense! We went over with a group of subaru owners the first time and it was a great experience, grabbed some passenger laps, looked around the museum and spent hours just walking around the car park chatting cars! Hotels are all lovely and the scenery is amazing.

Another thing to remember - if you're an expert at driving the 'Ring on Gran Turismo, this in no way equates to real-world skill on the track. A mate of mine thought he was going to be amazing, but ended up comprehensively embarrassing himself. The worst thing you can do is assume you can take the racing line in every corner, because 95% of the time there will be someone overtaking you... and, as Adam says, it'll probably be someone in a diesel Golf that knows the circuit better than you!

What about a track day? Fine it won’t be 13 miles long but the right circuit can be just as exhilarating. Also benefits are, you don’t have to drive to Germany to get there, you get more track time for you coin (rather than 19 euro a lap), it’s a race track so you know you won’t come over a crest at 80mph into a Camper chugging along at 20mph and if you do fall off you won’t be charged 11 billion pounds for recovery and bending the ARMCO! I do however know a guy who runs track days at the ring! As in the whole place locked down for the day – now that would be very tempting! On the whole crashing front I remember reading a horror story where some guy fell off the track and slid a good distance down the ARMCO. When he was recovered back to the pit he was landed with a bill of nearly £15k! They even charged him for the damaging the grass!

Cheers for the replies fellas. Sounds like I will be going, but not sure which vehicle we will be taking yet. Friend is likely to be taking his Nissan 100NX with no third gear, could be interesting!!! Have a pic of a mashed up NX, and my old Cav gsi.

We went with the 205 in September and I've mixed feelings about it.
yes it's a brilliant circuit, the scenery, elevation of track etc are fantastic, but as people have mentioned you really need to know it. We stayed at 'Sliders' and the owner could do a late 8 minute lap in a pretty standard Jetta, he'd done in excess of 12,000 laps .............
A trackday is to my mind a better environment for a proper thrash as the costs that you can incur at the 'ring are massive, but if you have to go, do it, but go steady and don't try too hard, as Adam said you need a few hundred laps under your belt first.
Just my tuppence, I've been but I'm not rushing back

Friend is likely to be taking his Nissan 100NX with no third gear, could be interesting!!! Really, recovery costs are pretty steep if he blows the box on the track, and if you drop fluids, that is a world of pain you don't want. have a butchers here nurburgring.org.uk/fluidleaks.html and a look around the whole site as it is rammed with info. I would love to take one of mine over there, but funds wont allow at the mo but intend to in the next few years
