I went to court today over my no license/ insurance/MOT debacle from about six months back. The verdict?
Six points and £150 fine. Better than a kick in the nuts I reckon. So all I've gotta do now is reapply for my license and I'm back on the road (fingers crossed!)
So anyway, with both my cars off the road without mot's I'm left with a very important choice to make...
BX 16V or Saab 900 Turbo
Thinking caps on everyone.

Makes me laugh.... How much is insurance, say £300 for a retro, tax, if your lucky free but if not, 150 odd quid a year, Mot £40.......£490...
Fine..£150...whats the deterant...and thats only if you get caught... ;D Mind you the 6 points could hurt and getting insurance later on too
Use the BX, lower the lever to get it on the deck but watch you don't knock yer teeth out... ;D

As for the BX, I've had one before and it was so much fun i want another, I've never had a saab though and i'm wondering what i've been missing out on. And yes, the bx was regularly driven in the low setting, but only when people were looking

Insurance tends to have to relate to the car your driving.. ;D. I don't see why, how the hell are you supposed to drive 2 at once..one driver, one insurance, one tax..easy, job done...

I am quite chuffed really, I'm still not sure if they're gonna make me re-take my test but most people i've spoken to, including the magistrate reckon i shouldnt have any problems so i'm just gonna re apply and see what happens.
Still cant decied between the saab and the citroen, guess i'll have to wait and see what comes up and how much it is.
The BX will definatly be the 'proper' gti, 16V, 160 Bhp = the most fun you can have with 5 doors for under £500 ;D

Saab 900 quick but dull. BX fast but fragile.
I happen to love the BX's straight edge styling and the GTi 16v is a monster ride with big tuning potentail. Go French!

Not really relevant to you Rev D, but I recently read a rather tragic story about a BX. I'll try and post it as a separate thread this lunchtime.

I have a 900 convertible turbo manual advertised. It is a nice one. A little shabby cosmetically, needs a new roof (leaks in but not in the passenger cabin) and some welding to the windscreen pillar. But the good bits, MOT until August. This weekend it will have another 6 months tax. Front tyres are brand new. It has reciepts from the last owner, parts for an engine rebuilt (shells, crank regrind, new pistons and headset, Used gearbox and recon turbo). The roof will cost about £6-800 fitted, but if you are even vagually mechanical you get one from a place in the US in original quality canvas for about £250 and fit it yourself. I think all they need is a philips and torx screwdriver and a stapler. It is in the forsale adverts. good solid car. I need to sell as I fancy a change, and I ruined a dream by buying one.

Sounds like a good enough result seeing as you didn't mean to do anything wrong, bet you're glad with that. I do agree that it probably isn't much of a deterrant to serial insurance/license dodgers, hence the number of them on the road, I know a few people who don't bother having a proper license or taxing, MOTing or insuring a motor just because they can't be bothered with the costs, even though they probably could afford it, and the law doesn't seem to be able to do a bloody thing about it. Then again possibly if someone's been caught deliberately not insuring a motor more than once the law will catch on that it isn't a mistake and the punishment will get a bit more severe.

TBH its not surprising there are people around with no insurance when you see how much it costs. When you start off your driving career, even in some disgusting Panda 750L or some such deathtrap you struggle to get legal for less than a grand. A grand!!! WTF! I'd be very interested to see a breakdown of where that grand goes, I wonder how much of that goes into the actual pot from which insurance payouts come from.

Actually I quite agree with you Mr Bo11ox, I know my last post seemed more critical of the people doing it than of the things that make them do it, but like any criminal or socially deviant activity (and not all of them are bad things I'll add, civil disobediance is the cornerstone of any democracy, even a curse word and unjust 'democracy' like the UK!) it's never as simple as "these people are deviants, they break the law because they are lawbreakers and must be punished", which is a sort of Conservative Party line to take on matters, there's always a motive behind any kind of infraction of law or norm, and in this case people don't hand over their cash to the govt. and the insurance companies because they don't have any or can't spare it! Obviously that's a bit of a generalisation, but you can see what I mean, even when you can afford to shell out for a license, tax and an MOT, it's heartbreaking to do so when it leaves you skint, and many new drivers start out this way. It's also worth noting that many new drivers are also young, possibly students, who let me tell you aren't in a good financial position at the best of times, so when you're running up debts left right and centre, it's highly tempting to try and get away with not paying for the odd thing you think you'll get away with, whether that be the TV license or the car insurance. Then, give it a few years, said skint people have been doing this for years and are now a little better off but still far from affluent, they haven't been caught yet and the system is still screwing them blind, so, they say to themselves, why stop now, 'the man' already gets so much of their cash, and they haven't been caught before now, it'll be alright, and there you go, you now have serial offenders in the eyes of the law.
