a slight posibility for poor running could be fuel frothing, where the carb is mounted on a rubber manifold, vibration can make the fuel in the float chamber froth up and ruin running, but things like harmonics mean it may only do it at certain speeds/rpms ttfn glenn

Well here is a video of it ticking over. You can hear the firing is very sporadic and rough, but it does catch and pick up at a couple of points. Could perhaps a bad plug contribute to the poor running? Lewis

Hmmmmm maybe the dodgy HT leads giving up/got a loose connection?
I would say put the original filter back on, but I know it ran alright without when you showed me. Hmmmmm

Yeah I thought that, so cut it down a little, stripped from fresh wire and re-connected it.
I had another play today. I whipped the plug out. It was black but ok so I gave it a little clean and popped it back in.
I seams to run much better when cold. Once warm it won't hold revs at all, but when cold it will tick over ok, on closed throttle with full choke.

I got it running better so here is a vid of me riding it. There is no belt tentioner, so the belt is just slipping and only transfering a little bit of power at the moment. Also need to excuse me almost falling off lol. also knocked this up with myke on sunday afternoon. Just need to get a friction wheel sorted out.

That's great! How did you get it running better?
Just need to sort out your drive system a bit better now. Am thinking strong bracketry, belt roller from and engine and a long lever.

I've a belt tensioner from a Sufffolk Punch mower if you want it. They used a V-belt with this roller (linked to a lever on the bars) to control the drive to the rear roller. It's a fairly substatial thing with a steel roller on a greased plain bearing, and you can have it for nothing.
There is one slight problem - it's at my parent's house in Hertfordshire, and I'm in Bristol at Uni. I'm not likely to be home until mid-late June, and no-one else knows where it is. However, if you haven't found anything better by then, do give me a shout.

D&O thanks!
Myke - I shouted at it until it worked... Seriously though, I think it is to do with not having an air filter. I will be making one tonight and seeing if that further helps!
Jev - Thanks for the offer mate, and i may take you up on it, however I have some ball bearings at home that look about the right sort of size, so again, this evening will have a play.

That's looking BRILLIANT Lewis. Nice work and glad to see it finally coming together.
Mark is right about the airbox - when we got the engine for 'Project X' finally running the other week, it ran like a bag of poo. OK on tickover, but awful when you tried to rev it at all. As soon as we put the airbox on in ran brilliantly right through the rev range.
It might not be the solution to your running issues, but certainly worth trying?

Just a few mock-ups to tease you: It will hopefully be running these tyres when we're finished on banded mini rims Hopefully a load more progress this weekend ;D

The running issue is definately linked to the air flow.
I fixed the choke at 'half mast' to reduce the air into the engine and it is now running much better.
I didn't get a chance to do any work on it the other day, so will try and sort out a suitable air filter and cone over the weekend.

Here are a couple of pics to go with the vid.... Here is the belt tentioner on the trailing side of the belt. It started off on the leading side of the belt (the top) but of course, as it engaged the belt pulled tight and released the tentioner. Now on the bottom though you need to be careful letting the clutch out as it really bites unless you gently feather it. I was having to feather it in the above vid because I have NO throttle control. In the above vid, the engine was just running a fast idle. and here is the tentioned belt. the tentioner was made from a small rubber bush with two washers running on a set of small bearings. I changed the seat to a sprung one as the other seat was a little hard on the ball area! I also have fitted a rear mud guard, although I may change it to one with an inbuilt light.
