I love the J-Car. It is a platform knocked up by General Motors which has provided me some of my favourite cars. What cars came of it? You'll know the stylish Vauxhall Cavalier MK2. Love these. Must have a ridiculously poor survival rate - loads of them one minute, all gone the next! What went on there? It stinks. Here's the Opel Ascona equivalent being RAMMED TO DEATH. Loads of American versions. Here's a Pontiac Sunbird J2000 Convertible. And a crusty sedan. This was from an auction! Just think, you could have owned that. Want some luxury? Here's the Cimarron, by Cadillac. For a new kind of Cadillac buyer, etc. Came with chintzy interiors and often with a 2.8 V6! It did very badly. People are idiots. Here's a nice Chevy Cavalier. They did a coupe too! Looks smart. And they kept making J-body Cavaliers until 2005! Bonkers. Never seen one of them before. Going back to Pontiac for a moment, they ran this Sunfire right up to 2005 too! Go on the J-body! Nice one lads! What were Oldsmobile doing? They were knocking out Firenzas. Here's a sporty coupe! Prefer the sedan though. There was also a station wagon. Here's a Holden Camira - fun fact, the MK2 Cavalier Estate used parts shipped over from the Camira Wagon. How do you like them apples? Even Japan couldn't escape from the charms of the J-car, look at this bad boy! Isuzu Aska. There was a 2.0 turbo one, which is probably that. And a diesel. Here's another weird creation, the Toyota Cavalier. Knocked up in the USA and shipped over to Japan. And here's a Chevrolet Monza from Brazil. What is it with Brazil and 2-door notchbacks? They seem to get them of everything, can't blame them as they look ace. Finally, pour yourself a whisky and admire the crisp Bertone styling of the Daewoo Espero. The most beautiful J-car ever produced. I love it. It's a stunner. Do you love the J-car too? In that case, you are my friend. If you don't like the J-car, GET OUT OF HERE. Never darken my doorstep again.

Wow...talk about different viewpoints. Over here, the J-body cars are generally disdained as the worst automotive crud you could possibly be unlucky enough to own. People who modify them are usually ridiculed by the vast automotive enthusiast community. I'm not exaggerating. The addition of the ecotec engine has made them a bit more acceptable...but not a lot. My wife's car is a 2004 Chevy Cavalier 4 door (5 speed ) with the 2.2 Ecotec engine. I love driving it, but it's definitely NOT a platform I'd spend any money on due to the stigma . I have however considered swapping the 2.4 ecotec into my Mk1 Rabbit (VW Golf) though...

I do like the J-car. My Parents had an SRI for a while, which was a really good car.
I actually saw a Mk2 Cavalier in the wild a few weeks back - ok, so it was a crusty-looking standard thing in a back garden that didn't look like it had moved for months or longer, but I was surprised to see it. I'd sort of forgotten about them.

This car has always been one of my pet hates along with MKIII escort and montego and a few others. Sorry.

Mk2 Cavaliers disappeared so fast I'm surprised there aren't Internet conspiracy theories about it.

Picture of the Aska didn't work, here's one instead. And an Irmscher. Mad trims, dunno if they're stock.

Let's have a bit of a run through of some performance J-cars. Some of the info might be wrong due to the complexity, but it might be interesting at least. Vauxhall Cavalier SRiNumerous 4cyls - 1.8 and 2.0, best being the SRi 130 which was a 2.0 with 130ps! This is just a normal early SRi though. Chevrolet Cavalier Z24GM 3.1 V6 with 140hp. Earlier versions have a 2.8 V6 with presumably less. The Cimarron could also come with that 2.8. Isuzu Aska IrmscherUses an Isuzu 4cyl 2.0 with a turbo, offering a meaty 150ps! Pontiac SunbirdGT model pictured which has a 4cyl 2.0 turbo with a rather hefty 165hp as standard! I think you could get a non-GT turbo, same engine but different trim etc. Anyone want to chuck some more in?

I looked quite seriously at buying a 2L 8V turbo sunfire for a while, how awesome are they .

I'm all for cav love. great cars, the americans managed to ruin most, soft suspension, emision controls choking any life out the engines, added loads of weight, the cadilac version was terrible by the time they finished, and they didnt move on when we did in 1989 lol thats why anyone over that side of the pond wont get cavs being good cars in their day, cus theirs were wibblepoo lol some looked cool tho.

Excellent, a bit of Cavalier/Ascona love! Nice one.
Thing is though, people can have some very volatile opinions, especially when it comes to cars. Statements like "I would rather ride the bus than drive one of these" - seriously, would you? You'd stand there in the rain waiting for the hourly bus with sticky floors and sit there whilst babies scream and phones go off? Think it's just that it is easier to slag something off than try to appreciate it.
There's not many cars I don't like. There's a lot of cars that don't do much for me, many more that aren't aimed at me (but I can appreciate them for what they are), but they're better than a sodding bus. Take a Corsa Envoy with a 1.0 3cyl - pretty unpleasant to drive, still rates much higher than a bus to me. It's not like the J-car is a big joke either - the idea of an Isuzu Aska diesel or a 1.8 Cimarron could provide a bit of a titter to most, but surely we can largely agree that things like the Cavalier SRi are full-on well-loved mass-appeal motors.
Whether it was a good idea at the time or whatever, I would love a go in one of those Z24s. Vauxhall Cavalier MK2 but in a smart-looking body with a V6? Sounds alright to me, sign me up.

all very true hirst, my mum had a few mk2 cavs when they were new, done the job well, fairly big hatch to throw us all in and the shopping, and quick enough to scare the hell out of any of my mates, back in the 80s the sri was a quick car, thats where my love for them came from. i would drive anything rather then get on a stinky bus. actualy i tend to like the under dog or even like driving some terrible cars, its all an experience, just don't take things too seriously ive even had a few allegros, and they wernt that bad at all lol
any specs on the z24s? power to weight wise, its not alot of power from a 3.1

Ah, the whole J-car phenomenon, brings back happy memoires of reading the Daily Express' World car books and wondering what the heck a VW Gol was. ;D Chevy Cavalier coupe. Squint a little bit, and say the words: 'Junior Opel Monza'...
