A friend of my dad has had this car since new, been dry stored since '91 but not been run at all. He wants to get rid of it, just wondering if it's worth doing it up and selling it/using it, or if it's better to just sell as-is or scrap. Not a big bmw fan tbh, but here's what info I've got so far: BMW 520i 60k miles Silver 3.0 straight 6 B Reg (85 ish) No obvious rust but not got a lot of room to look around Some pics: Any thoughts or opinions?

My first thought is "Sell it to me!" (no, really).
My second thought is that while these cars aren't worth millions, they are popular. Plus, that looks like an integral garage, which means it would be a million times less damp than a detached garage, ergo the car should be solid (possibly).
Deffo worth trying to save. It's just up to you if you save it, or if you punt it on for someone else to save.

E28's are ace. Definatley worth keeping. Should still fetch pretty good money too, especially considering the mileage, and that it looks to be in excellent condition I'm sure it was just a typo, but just in case, it'll be a 2.0 six pot, not 3.0

Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

E28s used to be very solid, comfortable and reliable cars. Even when a 2.0 straight six, 123hp won't give you thrills at all while cornering , they're worth keeping and most of all, using. About a year ago or so I used a M535i as a daily driver, and can assure they're really comfortable. And most of all, getting very scarce now. Should you need any spare part, you can serch them at a very competent german company called Walloth Nesch. Easy to find them at google. Cheers....

I say save it! Or better still, sell it to me (no, realy...!)... Back of the que... But I love it so much... I love the idea of rolling it stock. Bar a slight drop. And some BBS rims. And maybe a good period stereo fascia hiding some modern hi-tech gubbins. And a stainless steel exhaust. And maybe hide a supercharger in there. The interior would need a re-trim perhaps. So I guess, not very stock. But I love it so much...

Considering it's been in the lock up for the last 19 years it looks pretty dam good still in these photos, That engine bay looks lovely.
I reckon a good day servicing and cleaning would see an MOT on that no problem, It's got to be worth at least £1500-£2000 with a ticket.

I have a lachs silver 520i e28 manual and it's very fun indeed. Quick enough to razz around in and will sit at 100 (i mean, 70) all day on the motorway. I've got BBS rims and a 30mm drop on it and love how it looks stainless steel backbox is on the way after i got a hole in my standard backbox (sounds the absolute tits!)

Had a quick google and it looked like it was a 3.0, but maybe I got it wrong then. If he is up for advertising it for sale it will be on here first if it's down to me

I had an e28, and that was just the 518i and that used to buzz along really nicely for such a heavy car. Only when on the road you do realise they are quite big still and command a bit of respect when approaching people in the outside lane. Best looking 5 series from e28 to date hands down, how they all should have looked.
Loved mine, and had 15"bbs with overly chunky/massive profiled tyres on the rear, and smaller profile on the front. Looked sick.

The 520i isn't quick. I had one and it made a lot of the right noises but wasn't very fast.
Any e28 with a verified less than 70k on it has got to be worth £1000 + . The 520i auto isn't the most desirable but if it's clean there'll be lots of people out there happy to exchange it for money if it's got an mot as there's so many battered ones out there (see mine for example).

Right, I'm not saying this because I want it, I'm saying this to avoid the owner being a tad upset when he doesn't get £2000 for it.
Yes, we're all in awe of the mileage and how clean it is etc, and yes, if it had test it would indeed sell for a bazillion spondoolies. The fact of the matter though, is that it won't at the moment.
It's not been run for 19 years! That's a whole person who can drink worth of being laid up! Brakes, pipes, fuel lines, rad, tyres, (some) wiring (possibly), transmission fluid, battery, oil, filters etc will all need renewing. That's if the engine will even turn, for all we know the pistons could be 'at one' with the block by now. Either way, only a fool would run it without renewing the head gasket, oil pump and water pump, and belts and tensioners too.
The condition of it dictates that it should be saved, and yes, once it's MOT'd it will be worth strong money for an E28 as I'm sure it will buff up a treat, it does look mint after all. But, it's only going to get to that stage with a lot of effort, and I would imagine over £500 (if you wanted to do it properly).

that 2 litre 6 pot isnt even fast in the 3 series, lovely sounding smooth engine, but on an auto box it will be very sluggish in a 5 series, don't try selling it as a performance car, best get it all serviced, cleaned up and sell it on as a stock classic car.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I'm thinking it might be best to let someone with more experience, space, and time fix it. Don't wanna bite off more than I can chew, especially when there's a lot to do on my own car this year. My dad will most likely be seeing him again over the weekend or next week, so they can discuss if he wants to ebay it to get best price, or if he'd rather avoid the hassle and just offer it up on here (that will be my reccomendation). Anyone care to guesstimate how much it'd be worth as a rough guide? edit: The condition of it dictates that it should be saved, and yes, once it's MOT'd it will be worth strong money for an E28 as I'm sure it will buff up a treat, it does look mint after all. But, it's only going to get to that stage with a lot of effort, and I would imagine over £500 (if you wanted to do it properly). Thanks, will pass that on too so he he's got something to go on as to what fixing it will cost, doubt that'll be an option for him though - my impression is he doesn't really want to keep it although he doesn't *need* the space, so hanging onto it isn't a problem either.
