These two pictures were in last Saturday's Telegraph Motoring section, asking if anyone knew what the car is/where it's from etc etc. So, any ideas? I don't have a clue, but the window area/cockpit does look similar to a Capri's. Apologies for poor pic quality, no scanner+week old 'paper... Cheers, Greg.

Going by the rear engine and the wheels I'd say it was probably beetle based.

Looks to be an early beetle based kit car or one off special to me.

Front looks like a Matra. Rear lights Datsun-esque.... rear 3/4 looks either capri or 240Z....
And the wheels have quite a 'wide' stud pattern.
It's a wierd one and no mistake.

Some kind of kit car perhaps? The front end seems inspired by the Toyota 2000 and the Lotus Elan and that rear side glass is definately from a Capri I'd say, probably based on a Beetle floorpan like Dick Deluxe says. Either way probably not the best of motors, but retro enough, if you're really curious maybe some of the kit car forums might have an idea.

The bumper does look Matra, or maybe Panhard. Rear lights look Datsun Z/Granada...but google says no...both are smaller. The rear arch/wing looks like its Stag-derived.

I while back there was a simlar question on this forum about a blue unkown car of similar shape taken in a street in a foreign land (anyone remember?), not much to go on, sorry The one that looked to be in Russia? As it might say on their website, there was a small article by Sir John Whitworth on the unknown retro in the Telegraph asking for people to send in their answers/ideas - so hopefully we'll find out in 2-3 weeks (his column is monthly..). The car was apparently parked in the middle of nowhere at the side of the road, no real info about it. The number plate was blocked in the photos. Cheers, Greg.

I remember that one, the crazy Ford badged one in Russia. I thikk the conclusion someone gave us on that one was that it was the product of one of Russia's car-customising competitions that came about during the Soviet era, when the local petrolheads weren't in a position to mess about with big V8s, blowers and all the rest, so spent their energy on customising bodywork instead, so it's possible that the blue Russian one was some heavily reworked Capri. That one seems Beetle based and in the UK though.
