Almost every tow I have had has been some form of nightmare. I'll maybe post some stories later when I'm on the pc. hmmm still gives me a cold sweat this one... Hillman Avenger - used as garage loan car/hack. As favour go to pick it up as would not start. Me in Avenger as brake man loony in front with big car (range rover) towing. Twighlight when I got in. Dark and raining 20 minutes later in twisty up and down country lane cannot find lights/windscreen. Recken we were doing 60 odd. could not see a thing. Got to garage I smelt of cooked brakes for days... OH! I found the switch :-) eventually

A mate of mine tried to tow my Mk2 Golf with a 205 GTI using a steel rope (the kind you lash a telegraph pole with) despite me insisting it was a bad idea.
Tore the towing eye (and a few square inches of boot floor) straight out of the 205 and nearly went through my windscreen.

Does anyone fancy saving the old girl, mot'd till Oct 2010!!!!! Open to offers Wow, that "MOT thing" some of you like to harangue on and on about, how it ensures safety to the public and so on and so forth, and how we colonists are so far behind in caring for our puppies and kittens, this is more evidentiary proof of how sound the MOT system really is! I am relieved and reassured. No junky stuff gets out on your roads (puffs chest), no sir! ;D they only have to check for rust in certain areas, and if its coming through from inside the chassis sometimes there are no external signs of it, bits that are hidden from view can go really rusty and not get noticed, MOT is supposed to insure the car wont fall apart on its own, not that it wont get pulled apart by something else. I dunno if its true or not but I was told by a Ford worker once a long time a go the "towing eyes" are really only designed for use as tie downs, not for towing, if you join an off road club they normally insist you have proper shackles on the vehicle for towing you out of ditches.

Butterz, that does not sound good! Was it quite obviously bent? I worry as my car's had many towings and tow-starts in the past lol It looked pretty bad, was pinched together and looked as if it had been pulled forward. I had resolved myself to the fact that it would need a new one and the chassis rails "adjusting". Got it off a few months back and checked the measurements against the sportspart manual and it seems perfectly fine, just bent the middle out square again and its happy as larry. I can find the measurements if you don't already have them?

Faster. Faster. Until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death.

i do try and avoid being towed by anyone without "delicate" car control, also do me best not to crash in anything old. I manged to bend the curse word out of a big strong ex RAC A-frame towing a Range Rover once, some vehicles are tough however old they are. lol
