Drive it there in a car? How are you planning to get it out of the car. Going to need either a large number of strong people or an engine crane to start with, so I'd say use the same method to get to the back of the garden.

Four people, two lengths of strong rope and two long pieces of wood.
Wrap rope round engine.
Thread long pieces of wood through rope.
One person at each corner of engine.
Wood over each persons shoulder while in a crouched position.
Straighten legs and lift engine.
Slowly walk to shed ;D

as above! Tescos cages work a treat!
Other than that my other methods include
Skate board wheel barrow carrying rolling on poles
Best of all i hadto tak a engine from m garage around to the front of the house, its about 200 meters. I took a old bonnet, sat the engine on the pallet put a tow roe on the bonnet to the back of the car and towed it there!

Anything with wheels won't work on grass. I did the same thing a few weeks ago and found that a cheap box of laminate flooring came in very helpful - laid on the grass it's strong enough to slide an engine over and quite low friction too. Ideally you need to drop the engine onto something quite stiff (I used an old oven tray) as that will slide over the laminate flooring quite easily.
4 strong blokes is the best option though if you can arrange it.
Rolling on poles is good too (fence posts better) if you've got 'em.

I use them plastic trolleys supermarkets use to shift crates around. They take 500kg apparently, and it shifts my Merc V8 and gearbox around without too much grief. The ones I use have steering castors at one end, and handy brakes to stop it rolling away! Like these: I would say though, that you'll struggle to move it over grass as the wheels will just cut into the ground. I'd lay some thick board down as a path to roll on, and if you're moving over uneven ground make sure the engine is secure as it WILL topple over and fall on your foot. Ask me how I know! ;D Supermarkets and department stores won't let you have them, so you'd have to find a way of... erm... liberating one. If you're anywhere near me (Nottingham) you're welcome to borrow one of mine.

I realise that it's not your pic joem83, but why would this person bother using a trolley and engine stand for a VW engine? If you've got another person to help you then you can easily carry around a fully-dressed VW engine with the mufflers on and everything, even with the oil bath air cleaner still full! I've always just pulled them apart on the workbench as well, an engine stand would blow the budget.

i have moved v6 engines on wet planks before
you need two people really, one to pull one to push and balance
and a couple of 6ft+ long 3 or 4 inch wide planks, kept wet
its not easy, but possible, once its sliding its a doddle.

Good god, Imhotep's boyz moved multi-tonne chunks of Aswan's finest into huge pyramidal funereal monuments with ropes and boards almost 5000 years ago. Man up a bit, mate. ;D
