With the 'ecomuscle hybrid' project the electric motor was a cylinder type that was mounted in the drivetrain. (cutting the propshaft and shortening both halves to locate it in the middle) This way the motor becomes a dynamo charging the batteries if needed whilst you are using the engine to propel the car. At least this way you never get caught out of range of the next battery charge. The motor.... as is the case with most DC motors..... doesn't need a gearbox cos it provides max' torque throughout the revs range. This is why electric propulsion is very efficient for drag racing. this is all true and cool but my pipe dream was a fully electric vehicle not a hybrid. Although that's on the list of "stupid things I'll talk about a lot and never build" too. I thought of using an Eldorado for that one.

Electric isn't innovative, rather antedeluvian. It was developed in tandem with the IC engine-powered cars. We had more electric powered cars 100 years ago here in Ohio in the 1910's than gasoline-powered.
Steam is the future OTOH, as evidenced by nuke subs and carriers and power stations. It comes down to heat generation and re-capture. A reactor in my Judge would give a whole new meaning to hot"rod"ing. ;D

I have been researching EV's a lot recently. I think you will be wasting you time using a forklift as a viable doner technology has moved on a bit in the last few years, especially the batteries! If you serious I think you would be better of digging a bit deeper and purchace readily available new parts that are out there (more stateside admittedly) Its been mentioned already but buy a light vehicle to start with, Honda civics seem a popular choice but anything upto 1000kgs would work This link has many EV vehicles, and many owners have links to their own sites www.evalbum.com/Enjoy

A gearbox is only really there to increase the torque by lowering the gearing, no need with leccy motors

There was a guy in the imp club about 8 years ago who made an electric imp, He used the guts of a milk float c/w its batteries. batteries went either side of engine bay, front boot and rear seat floor area.It sat low on standard springs! The motor was directly coupled to the input shaft on the box, she syncro was enough to to be able to change gear. He used to get 60 mile range and 55-60 top speed. Not bad for and old car and float! Remmoc may remember more.
