Hello all, this is my 1984 Reliant Rialto Pick-Up, formerly a saloon but converted to a Pickup. It is my first road legal car and it is noisy, windy, uncomfortable and totally impractical, but great fun to drive. I recently drove it over 200 miles, during which everything to do with the electrics went wrong. It still made it, but I have had to leave it with a garage for the moment as I did not feel it was sensible to try and drive it back with limited electrics.

That's brilliant! Great to see someone doing something different with a Rialto! Looks really good as a pick-up too. Hope thee electrical gremlins are sorted easily. Do Rialtos have the same / similar 850 engine as in the Robin / Kitten?

It has an 850 engine which is the same as the later Robins and Kittens, the earlier ones had 750 engines. The reason the electrics went was down to the starter solenoid which I would have replaced myself had it happened at home, but since it is so far away I have had to get a garage to do it. The conversion was not done by me and is actually very rough, and I pretty sure it was painted with a brush, but it looks good from a distance.

I agree, looks great as a ute/pickup. from your second pic though it looks like the ute back is plywood and gaffa tape? (hopefully that's just the lighting in the pic ) looks sorta like a sporty version of one of these: ;D

Nice, looks like it was pickup from the start.
I do like these old Vespa's above, when I was growing up, there were a few still about, in the early 70's.

The back is indeed made from plywood and is held on by screws. The reason it looks like it's not on properly is that I was widening the gap in the back so that I could use the rear view mirror, and I had very loosely placed it on to check the measurments.

There's a reliant pickup in Rotherham. Has an alloy body on the back. Very flash...

Cool, Glass over the Ply, maybe add a brace across it at the top edge of the pickup sides, add a perspex window and a little paint and it'll be one of the coolest little utes around, would love to go for a ride in it!

A bit of an update; I put it back on the original wheels following a series of punctures with the wellers, and I think it looks a lot better, so it will be staying that way. The exhaust system is now properly attached with bolts, rather than muffler cement, so it is a lot quieter and there are less exhaust fumes! On the minus side, I can now hear lots of nasty noises and smell lots of nasty smells which the loose exhaust used to disguise. Some more pictures:

Well, the MOT ran out a couple of days ago, and then it decided to catch fire. Fortunately I had invested in a fire extinguisher and managed to put it out so the damage was limited, but it will still set back re-MOTing it for a while. Seriously suprised the fire extinguisher managed to put out the fire, and I really thought it was the end of the car when I opened the bonnet! A somewhat singed airbox:

Nice work! I think these things go on fire quite often so its probably worth keeping a fire extinguisher in your pocket while driving.

I had always thought it was only a matter of time until it caught fire so I had mentally rehearsed what to do when it caught fire! I really thought it was the end of the car when I saw the flames, and I was more concerned with keeping the fire away from the other cars. The car seems to be trying everything to stop me from putting it through another MOT, but it only makes me more determined! Also, the ABC dry powder tastes bloody disgusting, managed to consume a large amount of it whilst putting the fire out.
