What on earth, how useless are drivers if they can't drive in 1" of snow? Had about 6"+ here, in a rwd car with summer tyres on. Sadly while this one could do with them, unless we get a few more winters like this, it would cost more than a possible lost days wage would to buy a set of winter tyres and spare steels. Will evaluate each year as it comes from now on through and hopefully have something 4x4 in reserve for those odd days, with decent open treaded tyres on.

I was referring to grunty's comment, there seems to be a fair amount of snow in the other pictures.
I don't know why people are so resistant to winter tyres, it might be tyre manufacturer propaganda but they're considered more 'cold weather' tyres because of their ability to cope better with temperatures below 7C (which is most of the UK during winter), where regular tyre treads harden up. I notice that ability with mine even when the roads are just sodden and cold - they resist aquaplaning and skidding a lot better. Surely buying a set of winter tyres and steel wheels for a car you're going to keep is much cheaper than buying/maintaining/insuring a supplementary 4x4 car, and they save winter wear on summer tyres and the nice alloys that might go with them. They needn't even be expensive, the retreaded winter tyres I bought were only £25 each and have got me through a lot of sticky situations.

Studs are overkill I reckon, unless you're driving on packed snow/ice all winter. They make an utter racket on tarmac and churn it up.

I am seriously considering them, but as this is the only snow that counts as more than pathetic we have seen in 10 years, they would spend most of their life in the shed.

For anybody who doesnt want to buy a seperate set of winter tyres, try getting some Vredenstein Quatrac3 (mud and snow rated) or Falken Sincera SN828 tyres. Both types are very good in the snow/wet/cold, but also excellent in summer edit - nearly forgot my old Pirelli P2500 Euro tyres, which were fab

I can remember when Bridgestone Blizzaks were pretty much the only choice but not common here.

When I was little I remember the Vredestein snow+ doing the rounds. I can't believe I was nerdy enough to pick up on tyre tread patterns, but it was a pretty funky one. You can still buy them new.

Bloody annoyed this afternoon, my daughter went to college this morning all fine then it started to snow. Swanbrook, the bus company that serves the college, decided they were not going to run buses from the college to the bus station which meant myself, and many others, had to drive 20 miles or more to pick up the kids, I brought 4 of em back to save some parents the drive. The main buses were fine!! Ah well a fun drive in the Tipo

I was hoping for an epic dump (of snow, obviously), but London is not quite the winter wonderland that everywhere else seems to be. Boo.

Well, this is what I had to contend with this morning, 4 inches of snow with a car that's three inches from the deck! I had a snow bow-wave by the time I got out my car park! Chris

Its still snowing down here near the M25 but its never gonna be bad enough in these 'ere parts to bother the pickup truck, It has cheapo Khumo AT's on it, although not really designed for the snow the tread is open enough and the sidewall soft enough that they keep the truck moving but still allow it to slide enough to have some fun, even on a packed snow road, we've not had to engage 4x4 half enough for my liking! More snow please!

Well, I'm staying in (work from home anyway) as last time it snowed I discovered my Benz is utterly useless! Ended up sitting in the car on the M23 for 5 hours before abandoning it on the hard-shoulder & getting a ride home in a bigass truck much like Chris' my front end is lower than that of a snow plough.. Recent conversation with my Dad: Dad: You've taken a perfectly good car & ruined it Me: What do you mean? I think it's much better.. Dad: You can't go in carparks or over speed bumps and if it snows you'll get stuck. Sh1t. Thanks Retro Rides ;D Anyway, as soon as the snow is compacted down think of all the fun I'll be having! SWMBO`s car abandoned in the distance. This was the first time we couldn`t get it out of the estate. A bit later on I took the Voyager out - no problemo ! I would help to get her car back on the drive but she has taken both sets of keys to work. Silly girl.

We've got over a foot and its still coming down hard. And my dad has gone to work in the Disco. That thing does appear to be unstoppable in the snow, its heavy, 4wd, diesel, automatic with all weather tyres on it.
