Since i was 8 whilst most kids dreamed of Ferraris and Lamborghini's, I dreamed of one day owning a Jaguar Xjs. When I was 15 my weeks school work experiance was at a Jaguar garage and I was priveleged to see how much the Jaguar mechanics pampered the cars when they came in for work. The mechanics were all close to retirement and loved the cars moreso than the owners. Now I'm 34 insurance isnt an issue I carried out my dream and bought my first ever V12 XJS. After 1 weeks ownership I will have to say I'm so dissapointed its untrue. It isnt a patch on my XJ6. The car looks great, but thats about it. Nowhere near a drivers car i was expecting. The XJ6 is nicer to drive, more comfortable, sportier feeling and feels so much better made. You just cant compare. A real shame as its a car ive always wanted to own and now i realise its actually pretty poor. Anyone else bought a dream/real want car only to be dissapointed?

I've allways wanted an XJS as well but people keep telling me not to get one.
Maybe you should have gotten one that has been modernised by Knowles Wilkins. Same car just much better ;D

Always wanted a Dodge Charger ever since seeing the General lee, and painted at least one old Datsun up like the General. Finally in 2001 I got a 69 Charger R/T, I imported it from USA , it was a pile of junk. I then spent 4 years doing it up and it was still a pile of junk. The worst driving, most uncomfortable, badly designed unergonomic, dangerous thirstiest stressful disappointing pile of junk I have ever set butt in. And I've had over 500 cars, mostly ones that cost £30 . Was glad to see the back of it and felt CURED from Dodge Chargers. Damn why do they have to LOOK so good?

My boss recently told me about finally getting to drive an XJS after wanting one since he was aboy in the 70's. He finally got to drive one in the early 1990's and he said he wished he had never driven it. It was a total dissapointment.
The only car I've ever been dissapointed with truly is a MK3 Golf GTi. I'd wanted one since before I could drive and I thought it was naff!Being out accellerated by a Citroen C5 Diesel!

Ever since watching Back to the Future in the cinema I wanted a Delorean, a few years back i got the chance to have a drive in one, the strut couldn't hold the gullwing door open because of the weight so it slammed on my head, the seats were uncomfortable, it was cramped and sweaty inside and the V6 auto was gutless, it ruined the dream

With my surname, I always wanted to own a Morgan. So I jumped at the chance to drive a Plus 8 when I worked at Classics...
I hated it. I really wanted to love it, but nope... shame.
Oh and XJS... designed for America. And it shows in the way it drives. Soft, squidgy and unsporting. I owned a very early V12 and whilst it was undeniably rapid (compared to my full race-powered Imp that I had at the time), it was remarkably dull IMHO.

I quite liked the Morgan Plus 8, though I drove a late one. Was expecting it to be as refined as a wooden pallet with four skateboards strapped to it but it drove very nicely.

Always fancied half the cars mentioned here, especially a Charger. Almost glad to hear about the disappointment as it means I wont ever attempt to splurge vast amounts of cash on one.
I did get to drive a '74 Corvette Stingray earlier this year, another car ive always liked, after the fun of burnouts wore off 5 minutes in I realised it was a terriblecar to drive.. even in a straight line.

Saab 900 turbo convertible. Didn't hate it when I owned it, but getting into after spending a year driving something japanese that I had spent a fortune in bushes/shocks/springs it felt like I had stepped into a tractor.
Took most of the drive back from Durham to Warrington to get used to it, but it never felt as good as the much shabbier 900 tin top I had.

Not really a dream car always fancied a 924 porsche, got one hated it! always broke now, the handling wasnt as amazing as people claimed (prefer my MGB, and Mini!), it sounded like a van, caught fire at lest twice, and finally tried to kill me spinning out on a stragnt road!
But the bect car ive ever had was an XJ40 Jag, quite fancied an XJS next, but after reading this i may just go back to the XJ6

drove a proper GT40. fantastic car (ex works Ford France car). a little awkward to drive but well worth the effort drove a proper 427 Cobra after i built the engine. acceleration litrally takes your breath away driven many real Jaguar D types. twitcy but exellent and fun to drive driven a few lightweight E types inc 49FXN, CUT7, 86PJ, 4WPD (feel free to googe the registration numbers) again excellent cars with CUT7 being my favorite drove a '60s Ferrari Californian Spyder (ex bob Hope car) bloody awfull. XJS's are too soft to have any fun with

I dunno, I've driven a lot of cars that other people rave about and found them to be nothing special or a bit duff. I forget how many people told me the Seat Leon turbo diesel thing was the hottest and greatest thing on 4 wheels but got one as a hire car and boy it was plasticky and naff.
Problem with cars of our age is that driving one today you may be driving a bad example. I drove a Series 1 XJ6 4.2 which was "disappointing" because the brakes were f**ked. This was very likely a problem with that specific example, not that all Jaguar S1's have such awful brakes.
I drove a Jensen Interceptor, that was a bit of an "is that it?" let down as its owner had been bigging up how MAD PWAR FAZT MENTALIZT it was for ages before I got any seat time behind the wheel. But then the quickest thing he'd ever driven was a P6 Rover 2000 so different standards I guess.
Every turbo petrol car I've driven has been WHACK. I just don't like turbos.
I don't have any specific "hero car PHAILZ" stories though.

I always wanted a MK2 Golf, ever since I saw a new one as a kid. Sadly, the one I bought 20 years later was a total shed. I would have another though, I'd just be more careful about what I bought

Oh , I forgot my Charger caught fire on me, the imbecile that designed the fuel pump managed to put a vent hole in such a place that when the diaphragm splits (as mine did) it shoots a geizer of petrol right through the alternator, and right at the gap between the distributor cap and the dizzy. Luckily I heard it go up just after I exited the car and all I lost was the dizzy wires.

The xjs was my favourite car at one point due to The Return of the Saint....i'd put me at about 8. I've never considered actually buying one though.
