i like presents to be thoughtful, yet practical. my girl likes them to be thoughtful too, but also romantic, like most girls i suppose. so how about something that's thoughtful, practical (outlasts normal flowers by a quite a bit ) and romantic? something with a lot of time, thought, effort and love lavished on its creation- she knows NOTHING of this at all, she thinks shes already had her present as i gave her the bike i bought her early, so she can get max use of it before she starts her placement in january. so i think shes going to be pretty surprised when she gets 'a bit of something extra so shes got something to unwrap' christmas morning

That's class! Did you laquer it or are you painting it? Laquer seems like the more sensible option so I suppose you've done it differently?

Thats gorgeous and it looks like it was hugely time consuming. As far as paint/colour, that very much depends on the girl, I know my lady would like it as-is

wow, this has been a bit more popular than I thought! thanks for all the kind words- I hope she thinks its as good!! to be honest, steelwork really is my forte in life, so I thought it apt to create something like this in the one medium I really have skill in. grizz, yeah i am a softie really but i like the juxtaposition of creating something so romantic in such a 'hard' material. to answer the questions- the entire thing is mild steel. all the petals and leaves are 18ga, with some short bits of 1/8" wire to mount the leaves, the main stem being 1/4". there's 18 petals in there it was all cut with tinsnips, and the sharp edges removed by slightly melting them with the oxy torch, which gives then a natural irregular finish like the real thing would have. each of the petals were tack welded on at the base before being heated up yellow and hot-shaped, using various pairs of pliers, and a little hot-hammering, the shaping of each one being done before the next was added. from buying some roses, dismantling one or 2 to see how they are constructed and to use the bits to draw templates, taking measurements, cutting out all the bits , shaping all the leaves and chasing in the veins on them, and then doing the assembly and shaping, I probably have about 3 days in it. thats a fair few quid at my rates, and i don't think i have a spare 5 weeks before valentines day!! the surface finish is purely from the steel cooling after its been heated up yellow to bend it to shape. as its hot rolled sheet it gives a dulled slaked finish, which needs cleaning up a bit. I will blow off the worst with the air gun then laquer over the rest of it, as it kinda looks like frost as someone mentioned earlier, I think she'll appreciate the finish just how it is, I think paint would only detract from the overall appearance anyway.

Jesus oh boss, that's class. Now you need to teach her the basics of metalwork, so she appreciates how hard that'd be to make.
