Well, after doing the Ramshackle rally for the last two years (some of you may recognise last years beer canned Mondeo retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=59558&page=1 ;D) So here it starts again... Exactly £150 has purchased us this. An Omega 2.0 16V GLS with 100K on the clock, no MOT or tax and a starting problem (coil pack probably I guess) It was up on Ebay with bids up to £50 and a B.I.N of £250. I offered him £150 and he took it. We collect on Saturday... It looks fairly tidy in the pics but we know from last years Mondeo that Pics can be VERY decieving so some of my own will show you the real state when I collect it. Ebay pics... Can we beat the beer can theme.... we'll see

Thanks guys, theme this year is "Team Tommy Tank" so will somehow be making it look like thomas the tank engine (ish) not sure exactly how yet but it will involve a chimney and a smoke machine.
Slammed 66 - We're hoping to use it again each year but if we can't sort storage after the trip it'll probably end up back on ebay, i'll tip you the wink if it does as it probably won't go for much "decorated" but will have new belts etc

i'm betting crank sensor, common as muck on these. and if that doesn't fix it, try the cam position sensor too, they both died on my old Vectra 1.8 (£400+ to fix at the main stealer!!! )

Coilpack, crank sensor or cam sensor - or all 3! I'll do some "paperclip" diagnostics when I get it back and see what's up then get down the breakers for the relevant bits... Should have it right as rain in no time hopefully.

Righty so we went to collect today and we're chuffed with it for the money. It has it's issues as you would expect for £150 and it's suitably Ramshackle which is perfect. There is no way on earth it's only done 100K looking at the interior wear but I think any clocking would have been done years ago as the guy we bought it off seemed very honest and a decent fella. Basically he bought it for £300 with 12 months ticket a year ago, just ran it and has bought another again for £300 with ticket so was happy to get £150 back for it towards the new one.... I guess £150 a year in depreciation isn't bad! So observations... - Wheels will need balancing - Clutch is edgy so we'll do this - Obvious stuff like a good service/belts etc - Bodywork has several poor quality repairs - doesn't matter! - EML light always on - we knew about this anyway - One rear speaker and grill missing?? Other than that it's great, goes well, no smoke, no nasty knocks from the engine. Doesn't even tap from the top end when started having been left standing which is ideal. Even has a Kenwood CD headunit which the guy left in! Pictures.. Collection... Fluid check after 20 miles to make sure it's not loosing anything... Rick modelling the new addition... Keyed front wing broken grill Engine bay Interior missing speaker Let the prep commence!

If the EML light is on, it may be in limp home mode.
No more than 5500RPM and shed loads of fuel dropped in the cylinders.
I had to replace both Cam and Crank sensors on my old Mk3 Astra.

Right then... we've dug this out and we are starting to get the car ready. First job was to whack it in for an MOT and see how badly it failed. I was quite impressed!
1. Fog light switch defective (basically it sticks in)
sorted this FOC as one of the team is a fireman and they had an astra with the same switch in for cutting up practice.
2. Windscreen washers not supplying enough screenwash.
- sorted this by just cleaning the filter.
3. CO emmisions on 2nd fast idle.
- Only just failed so will give it a bit of a caning on the way back to the test which should sort it. I've also fitted a known good second hand cam sensor which should help!
4. One tyre degraded (badly perished)
The local tyre company (orbit in Rushden) are doing this at cost £30
the mot was also provided FOC in return for a sticker on the car!
Should be in for a re-test this week then we plan to do the cambelt/waterpump/general service then start with the fun stuff!

Banger Rally in an Omega! You cheating B*******ds! Me and a mate did the Coyootee rally last year. 2200 miles in a metro van. Won best/worst car for our efforts. Only nearly died once.

I applaud you, I really do, but there were three of us and noe of us are particularly 'slight' and we had all our accoutriments too. We really couldn't have done it in anything smaller.

Hmm, looks like a perfectly serviceable daily driver to me. I can't really understand the idea of a 'banger' if it's modern and comfortable. Surely the 'banger rally' will be more like 'an uneventful drive with a car full of drunken louts'. Best of luck with it though, at least your car should be safe and roadworthy, which is the main thing.

Good work Bigrod, and I do absoluteley salute you apbellamy but check out what last years mondeo looked like when decorated up (link on the first post)... Couldn't do that to a proper little classic like a Metro
Wavemann - guess you either get it or you don't. The 190K mile Cav and 160K mile cat D Mondeos we've used previously were definateley old bangers, The Mondeo in particular broke down a few times... This Omega is a proper nail obviously clocked suspected ex taxi as well, remember pics can be very decieving. And no we aren't drunken louts but car fans having fun and raising money for a kids hospice along the way.

I gave mine away in Italy to another team who lived not far from me on the proviso that they brought all my gear back. They did, but took it round the Nurburgring on the way back. They tehn used it as a daily driver for a year and took it to Prague the following year in the same livery. It didn't make it back from Prague though. ETA, just read your other thread. Cool! LRD gets about doesn't he? I picked up and babysat a car for him for a wee while till he could get up to Scotland to pick it up.

LRD certainly does... I don't think I can bear doing all the preperation work and then sell it for peanuts again this year so i'm happy we've got storage sorted. Hopefully it will make many trips! So, my donated foglight switch arrived this morning so I got a few jobs done... First I switched the front fog light blank over from the faulty switch to the good one as the new one had provision for front fogs too which ours didn't then slotted it in.. Fogs on Fogs off Then onto the washer problem Off with the grill out with the pump out with the filter - look at the state of it! cleaned up and back together We now have nice powerful washers! Just need a good run to sort the emissions and a tyre and we should have that MOT!
