I'd bypass the fuse with some copper wire soldered in personaly. I'd like to be able to trace the circuit and work out where its placed but whatever, if they were mine they would go. The wadding is fine, but damping the cabinets would be worthwhile. Get some self adhesive 6mm rubber and glue it to the center 1/2 of each panel, that will deaden the cabinets (keep the foam in tehre too though). As for caps, i'd replace all the black ones and maybe the big orange one. They have the values and power rating on them, get polypropelene. Stick the crossovers in a seperate box kept on the floor and give the speakers 2 pairs of nice binding posts. Link it all up with some decent wire and you have a nice pair of modded retro speakers If you go ahead, this place is good for parts. Decent quality at good prices. wduk.worldomain.net/acatalog/Components.htmlOr, just clean em and enjoy tehm as they are

Dude, Sweet! I love those speakers. my next door neighbor had a pair many years ago, and replaced them with a pair of B&Ws. This must have been about 1994? I rock some "fake" TDLs (Made after they went bust and Richer Sounds bought the brand out) They sound decent for what they are, but just miss the sparkle you get out of an older speaker.

These may actually be the same pair. They are from my Father in law, who got them off a friend a while ago. I believe they were abandoned in his shed as they needed new tweeters.

In view of the potential re-sell value of the speakers - I would NOT advise modding them with bypassed fuse holders, unless you can do it without being too intrusive. They are there for a reason - to protect the tweeters from spikes from the amp. You should be able to get a replacement fuse holder quite simply on line.
I recently repaired a bair of Lowther speakers someone had 'modified' with some frankly horrendous crossover mods and some ill advised white paint. The value had been utterly ruined and they sounded worse for the mods. Once reverted back to as they were originally intended and a lot of paint stripper later, they were a darn sight nicer.
Sometimes its true to say that unless you *really* know what you are doing, its best to leave things as they were intended!

Well, no disrespect, but the resale value wouldnt be too high anyway so why not make them better? As for the fuses, how many speakers have fuses? not many. How many GOOD speakers have fuses? None! The lowthers sound nice, but they shouldnt have had crosovers anyway as they would be full range shurely? When it comes to lowthers all anyone is interested in is the drivers, there whats worth the money, doesnt matter what you do to the rest. Your right though, it is easy to make a decent speaker sound bad! I have a pair of tannoys (as already mentioned) There 70's, not worth a fortune, maybe £500. I cant wait to re-home them and modify the crossovers, replace all the conections and re-wire them ;D If you were worried about re-sale then yes, keep them stock. The fuse holders would be easy enough to find. I couldnt help myself with those caps though, easily put back to stock if needed too

I'll see if i can get a fuse holder and take it from there i think, i'm no audiophile, i just like the look of them being leather bound, they are bigger than the ones we have in the lounge but will blend in better than the black Pioneer ones i'm using at the mo and i'd prefer them to fit in better. 'course if they ARE worth some cash, were happy to flog them, there are things we want more than speakers.

Some speakers had a small light bulb wired in series with the driver to protect it. If too much power is applied, the bulb starts glowing, and the resistance of the filament increases. Obviously it added some distortion....

/\ Yep I've seen them too. In fact... I've got a pair of late 80s Goodmans speakers up in the loft (can't remember the model number.... but they are little bookshelf jobbies) that have just that. I remember a particular party back in the day when it became a great game to get them glowing brightest... Motorhead at excruciating volume seemed to do the trick IIRC. And you are right about the Lowthers... the crossovers powered some nasty piezo bullet tweeters (Maplin specials... yummy). They had previously been in a trendy wine-bar restraunt... must have sounded dreadful. I wish I had some pics of them... what were they thinking!! However, back to values... it depends on your definition of 'not a lot' but devaluing anything worth more than £50 needs consideration in this house! ;D Bypassing the fuses won't hurt them I guess - but the caps, I'd leave alone. They look like a mixture of Sprague and Mullard units from the pic - much loved in many Hi-Fi and Guitar Amp circles. Modern polys may give a more sparkly treble response/more bass punch but sometimes that is at the detriment of warmth - something sadly lacking in modern speakers, IMHO and as a result often can become tiring after prelonged listening. But hey... great find. And supa-fly in leather ;D Enjoy!

If warmth is still desired then new paper in oils would do the trick. Its not that the old caps would be bad quality, its just teat they break down and drift in value over the years. As for the lowthers, what were they thinking! The last thing lowthers need is help in the treble! Help with bass maybe if the cabs arent great. All this talk of retro speakers has made me buy another pair now Wife is getting annoyed as I'm filling the living room. I now have WD25a 60's goodmans twin axiette's Tannoy eatons And the new addition is a pair of quad ESL63's There broken though ;D

I'd love them - but I know I can't collect before early April. Unless someone's heading towards A52 from that way at some stage?

I've left a plethora of vintage stuff back in Ireland! B&W DM7Mk2's Mission 763 floorstanders KEF C30 speakers Meridian 201 pre-amp 2 x Meridian 105 monoblocks I also have a NAD 402 tuner which is retro tastic and a few DIY amps and DACs. I've left it all at home and now starting again, building my own amp & speakers (got a set of Technics SB-2211 the other day and were awful so flogged them quickly). May do a thread on here when I make some progress.
