Yee Haww Gladys rides again.
New throttle cable arrived this morning and is now fitted on the car its a bit of a fiddly job as accsess isn't brilliant but simple enough.
I fired her up hadn't started for nearly two weeks and started on the first turn of the key she seems to be running happily and the throttle no longer sticks.
With the aircleaner off to adjust the cable I have noticed what looks supiciously like engine oil in the carb and filter element is saturated with it. It was not like this a month ago when I serviced her. Anyone know if this is bad sign or should I just replace the filter element and live with it.
Paul
p.s. the crankcase breather pipe connects to the airfilter housing this could be the cause I suppose especially from ten million revs when the throttle jammned open. Reasonablr assumption?

1st time i've seen your thread paul! its dave that picked up the seat & subway ring!
awsome little car! glad i've had the pleasure of seeing it, even in dusky light! she's a beut!!! i'll defo give a hand with some welding on your tiurmph as soon as i'm mobile in my own motor!
really good to meet someone so enthusiastic about such a rare "true-classic" it would look good on some wider rims to just fill the arch up to the edge of the arche return lip, but obly if it would give you a better tyre choice or more comfort
oil in the carb could defo be from when your throttle jammed open! you could get rid of the breather that go's in the air intake & just pop one of those £4-£5 crankcase breather filters on, it may make your engine bay a little more dirty from the oil vapour but hey! its cheap rust proofing in the engine bay!!!
as said just double check the work you've done it it to make sure its all tickety boo
as i've said once i'm mobile again which should be pretty soon we could compression test the engine if you want just so you know where you stand with it!
don't the old renualt 8's 10's have a strange pcd like your DAF they have a gordini modal with wide chunky wheels in steel & really nice period alloys!
i'll save your number paul, see you again in coventry the heart of uk motoring! with a small amount of people that actually still love cars!

Breather filter will get cloged very quick as it is a boxer twin and the crank case changes size as pistons move in and out at the same time. You have a worn carter valve. Most Daf twins have this problem just clean the filter housing once a month and it will be fine.
Gordini and 3 stub renualt is a diffrent pcd to the daf

I love the coupes as well they are nice but very difficult to find. Marathons could be saloons as well. My personal favourite the 55 marathon coupe its just gorgeous. these fetch much better money than other dafs as well. More Dafs!!! Just thought I would mention that we used to own this Marathon... Absolutely knackered it was!!!!

I happen to know that car is safe and sound and quite likely to be restored.
I went for a quick jaunt around town today to celerbrate her running again. She is still running tickity boo all bee it with a slight flat spot that seems very persistant. I had forgotten how nice the steering wheel on this is its quite small and fairly thick, shes got an excellent lock and the steering is really precise. After driving the Triumph for a week she feels refreshingly small and agile which seemed to really nark a group of chavs in a Saxo that I murked away from the lights.
Oh and Dave I have not forgotten that I promised to let you have a go.

I'd love a 66 coupe, I'm trying to persuade a mate (chap on our website with the 400hp opel kadett coupe!) who wants a bike engine car project to pay us to put his ZX12R engine into one!! I reckon, though it would upset the purists, it would make a great car.
On another note, seeing as you are a poor student ( I remember those days not too long ago!!!) If you are ever stuck for a workshop at uni in Cov then our workshop is just outside hinckley. While I can't do any free (or any at all at the mo) work, you are welcome to use the workshop and tools, 2 post lift etc etc. yourself if you ever need to.
There, charitable thurs eve feeling sorted!
cheers!

I have thought about bike engines a few times myself for my 66 saloon would need alot of work amd a replacement clutch as a bike engine will not tickover slow enough, still do think about it some times though

Bin the standard transmission altogether, just fit an alternative axle setup and use the bike gearbox and clutch "as-is"
If somebody has a 66 that they want converting, I'd love to quote to do the job, it would make me want one even more lol!

I like the idea of a bike engine but without the belt tranny its not realy a Daf any more and you may as well do it to any other car on here.
If i were to do it i would use the bike clutch to over come the daf clutch problem them lock the bike box into the ratio that best suited the engine and Daf tranny ratios something around 0.4 to 1 so you could use all the bike engines revs.
You may think this is a wast of time but it is the trans that makes a Daf, well to me anyway.

Today has brought a small amount of daffing. Puncture repair induced. Whilst I had wheels off I thought I might as well check the adjustment on the brake shoes, this has opened a whole new can of worms and filled the swear jar.
Both adjusters on rear drums are seized front drums will adjust but where sloppy
Most worrying for 3 reasons.
1. a year ago when I bought the car I had the brakes profesionally overhauled and they where supposed to have fitted new back plates and adjusters.
2. In january I had the car serviced and mentioned that the brakes needed to be adjusted, which was announced done which it obviously wasn't.
3. The hand brake is barely working which presents a problem in a car that cannot be left in gear.

Yes the welding is on the Triumph though. The DAF is remarkably solid. I'm good all day saturday but have the warwickshire and west midlands meet on sunday. Seeing as I arranged it I thought I really ought to go

don't worry Ive sent the pics to you via PM. Whilst your here though I wouldn't mind a second opinion on the infernal flat spot that I seem unable to kill on this car. Apart from that and a bit of a clutch wine this car is in good useable condition.
I know what is causing the clutch wine but cant bring myself to pull the engine to change a bearing. It should last a fair amount of time anyway and when I next have to pull the engine I will do it then.

Its with a sad heart that I may be putting this car up for sale soon. Having been made redundant money is exceedingly tight. I would sell the Triumph but this will fetch more cash. I hope to find another way as I know I would deeply regret selling this car as its been awesome. Theres a heads up what would you do? Sell and cope or keep and not be able to afford to use it.
I do not want to sell this car if I can possibly avoid it as I love it to bits.

But I reckon you could probably avoid it. Your outgoings exceed your income because you've lost your job, so you need to cut back on your outgoings otherwise you'll be forced to reassess and try selling other stuff a month down the line. I'm not wording this very well, but what I'm trying to say is keep the car you prefer, and sell off your 'extra' car.. Or take it off the road entirely for a while if you can? And get job hunting.. Good luck getting it all sorted
