Yes its another rubber band car. From reading this forum I gather there are almost as many on here as on the Daf site ;D. Anyway enough bad humour and too the point. This is my 1973 DAF 44 MK3 knicknamed Gladys whom I bought from a fellow Daf enthusiast. She is my only car and therefor is used daily and I love it to bits. I have had her for just over 6 months and in that time have done a fair amount of work to her both mechanically and cosmetically even though she was a clean car when I got her. I don't know if this is common thing but whenever she is running well as she is at the moment I find myself looking for something to do and quite often find it. I primarily drive her in city traffic where she is comfy and fairly economical 40+mpg and also do regular long distance trips 300 odd mile long maybe once a month where she is not quite as efficient but is still bareable even on a student budget. Enough chit chat here are a couple of pics that where taken at newbury classic car show on the 22nd of November.

I never noticed before, but that eyebrow is brilliant. Purposefully scowling.. Reminds me a little bit of the Triumph Vitesse/Herald 13/60. See?

If I am right I believe they are both from the pen of the same designer. The 44 was designed by Giovanni Michellotti as where a lot of triumphs of the area. Unfortunaltly the bulkyness of the transmission ment it had to be high sided and some say this spoiled the lines of an otherwise sound design. Different wheels on these is very difficult as they have a unique stud pattern but there are some wheels available DAF had a wider meaner looking marathon wheel. But these are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo and I believe minilite make alloys for them. As for lowering it I think it would look better but for 4 reasons I wont be 1. Originality 2. Its my daily hack and I don't want the bother of panicking every time I go over the speed bumps at work. 3. I believe it would change the gear ratio not sure about that though. 4. I would be lynched by every other member of the DAF Owners Club lol. Paul p.s. yes loads of pics too many too post here so heres a link to my flickr account www.flickr.com/photos/37764524@N02/theres a few irrelevent pics in there but not many

That looks a great little car. ;D I've had a 55 and a 66 estate before and loved both for their quirkiness, neither of mine looked as good as yours though.

I can certainly see a few styling cues from other British stuff too. Fair enough on the lowering but it would look cool.. you get used to the speedbumps. It wouldn't alter your gearing I'll have a look through the photos now

Very nice!
Somebody suggested I'd buy a DAF here and use it for autoslalom instead of my 309, to underline my Dutch nationality... It may actually work pretty well with a variomatic as with hardly any straights it means that on other cars you're basically restricted to using 2nd gear only. Would need to be a shabby base car to justify modding it though.

Look on the DAF owners club forum Sales and Wants rough cars seem to come up every so often. As a club we are trying to save one from being spared out at the moment but unfortunatly the price seems silly. If its not running you should be able to pick one up for a couple of hundred even a concourse one doesn't go much more than a grand. dafcars.proboards.comPaul p.s. you don't have any vario splash guards do you mine where sawn up when they fell onto the belts a 70mph.

Look on the DAF owners club forum Sales and Wants rough cars seem to come up every so often. Well I don't think the DAF owners club classifieds is going to be much help given my location ;-) There's a 66 for sale here though, has been on sale for a while. It says in the description it's been standing for 20 years and has been driven very little, but from the pictures it seems that it wasn't inside for all of those 20 years... If its still for sale when (if) I "finish" the 309 and I can get it for less than what they're asking for it I might be interested. Would be a quite silly project though. Not sure what the price was but they do go for more on the mainland. The interior looks clean has a 46 selector on it though. Looks dirty but photos didn't show terrible rust. Places to check are trailing edges of the front wings they rust fast. The front valance and bootlid and around the headlamps. Sills rot from the inside and are an involved repair. For rallying a 66 would be better as the engine is either 1.1 or 1.3 renault unit and they also have much better handling due to the dedion style rear axle. The earlier cars had no diff choosing instead to rely on the limited slip action of twin belts. Belts for a 66 can also be taken from a volvo 66 or 300 series as they are the same size.

I love the coupes as well they are nice but very difficult to find. Marathons could be saloons as well. My personal favourite the 55 marathon coupe its just gorgeous. these fetch much better money than other dafs as well.

Hi paul
The PCD of the daf is 3x125 not that many wheels for them that is why my 66 will be converted to 4x100 when i get the time

Just got back from the FUCEM meet complete with a MECUF sticker numpty put it on the inside. Lovely day Gladys was mostly well behaved a few slight hicups e.g. 1 cylinder on the way, I really need to get some new HT leads, and an incidence of throttle sticking open on the way too low-life meet which was also great. Throttle stuck is quite interesting in an automatic its quite difficult to stop. Stefan get to the next one your 343 and Pauls brown 66 coupe all came up as topic of conversation.

Paul So what rear suspension is on DAFs, other than the 66? I don't know much about them, but I thought all were de Dion. I love your car. Great condition, very individual and a brilliant colour as well! Can we have more photos, interior, engine bay etc. Bearing in mind the common ancestory, do Volvo 340 wheels fit a DAF? Some nice period alloys available on those. My other guess would be Renault. If you want wide wheels, you could get a set widened. There are a few companies who do it. I know a contact on the Volvo forum who does this, so let me know if you ever want a contact. Cheers John
